13 Roller Game
...interesting, as I thought Roller Game of the Week was produced using KTLA/5's remote facilities during this period. In fact, there's a photo floating around the Internet of longtime play-by-play announcer Dick Lane seated with a mic in front of a large KTLA sign...

What did channel 10 show at 1pm? Was it an NFL game?

Nope...it was a political rally, but the listings don't give any more info on it- the PE stuck San Diego listings in a 3-page section in the back of their supplement.

As Dick Lane would say when breaking up an after game fight between two female Thunderbird roller skaters or announcing some unbelievable special on Early American furniture at Hub Furniture City, "Whooooa Nellie!"

The Roller Debry was on KTLA during the 60s, but I guess it moved to KCOP by 1970. As far as I know, Dick Lane was a KTLA employee, so I'm not sure if he went to KCOP with the skaters or not. Lane also did Wrestling from the Olympic, and other...uh...lesser sports, including the demolition derby on Saturday afternoons during the 60s.

...The T-Bird show was never Roller Derby in the '60s or early '70s (that was the trademarked name of Jerry Seltzer's San Francisco-based KTVU/2 product), but Roller Game of the Week, Bill Griffiths' National Roller League program. Thinking on it a bit more, I wonder if in fact KCOP/13 actually ran the KTVU Roller Derby but the Press-Enterprise goofed and put the wrong show name on the listing...

On the very last sentence, that's not the case. KCOP ran Roller Derby, the one starring Charlie O'Connell and Joanie Weston, with Walt Harris announcing, in the early and mid-60s.

I'm speculating that Mr. Lane, who would have been well into his 70s by 1970, retired from KTLA, he had been there from the beginning with Stan Chambers, and became a well-paid independent contractor for Channel 13 when they took over coverage of Roller Games and wrestling.

I'm also speculating that Dick Lane loved what he was doing, and was so strongly identified with both Roller Games and Wrestling from the Olympic that it made sense for KCOP to retain him as the announcer for both.

Lane obviously could have retired much earlier, and he lived well in Newport Beach while he was still working. He retired when he was good and ready.

If he were around today, Dick Lane would probably have a great career in infomercials.
