Sacramento was not unique in the amount of classical music
available up through the 70's. For example, Pittsburgh
had a fulltime AM/FM classical pair (WLOA AM/FM) until the
early 70's. Likewise, KDKA-FM was classical.

Other stations (often on both AM and FM), carried blocks of
classical music, such as WWSW, WRYT (once WCAE and later WTAE),
WYDD-FM and WJKF-FM. Even the religious station, WPIT AM/FM,
carried such music with the Metropolitan Opera.

Compare that with the near total absence of classical on
commerical outlets nowaways.

I suspect that the local affiliates of ABC's four sub-networks, CBS, Mutual and NBC pre-empted regular programming from mid-morning until mid-afternoon that day for live network coverage of the Apollo 11 mission.

The moon lander with astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin (who landed and walked on the moon the previous day) took off from the lunar surface around sometime just after 10 A.M. Pacific time, and docked with fellow astronaut Mike Collins in the command module (which remained in orbit around the moon) a few hours later. I suspect network coverage continued until around 3 P.M. PDT.
