Initiated in 1974 as the "championship of PGA Tour players," the TPC, in just a short time, has established itself as the unofficial "fifth major" in the circuit. Evidence of this can by seen by last year's final-round group of Lee Trevino [the eventual winner], Jack Nicklaus and Hary Player, holders of 114 PGA titles [entering last week's Doral-Eastern Open.] Purse: $440,000; winner's share: $72,000. Commentators include Vin Scully, Patt Summerall, Jack Whitaker, Ben Wright and Ken Venturi.

WBC featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez defends his crown against No. 1 contender Roberto Castanon in a scheduled 15-round bout telecast from Las Vegas. Sanchez is making his fifth defense of the title he won last year from Danny "Little Red" Lopez. Castanon's only loss came in a championship bout against Lopez in 1979. Also: the Golden Skates Speed Skating Championships, taped at Inzell, West Germany.
