As far as I know, 5, 8 and 12 all go by their channel numbers only.
 
5 is english programming (mostly US shows)
8 carries Chinese programs, mostly in-house
12 is the Malay channel also known as "Suria"

All three are run by Mediacorp, which owns The New Straits Times.
