Retro: "South Cackalacky," Sunday, July 6, 1969

Here it is--the first in my Christmas series of rare retros to mark the fact that I have some time to burn this season, something I did not have during most of the year. So enjoy this Yuletide treat (if the dates are off-putting, just fantasize about the warm weather on them and that will do the trick--honest).

What's "South Cackalacky," you say? A humorous nickname for South Carolina, the palmetto (you've got to be a Southerner to understand).

Whoops! WATU is now WAGT, of course, something I failed to mention in the legend, having gotten carried away with explaining its precarious situation vis-a-vis the networks. Happy 44th anniversary to the station, BTW.

"Putt-Putt Golf" was a 30-minute miniature golf contest, named for the Putt-Putt chain which used to be very big...but on www.puttputt.com today, there are very few left.

They were constructing a Putt-Putt in Hialeah FL (with 4 18-hole courses, a lulu), where I was raised. I was 16 at the time and wanted a job there, but was brushed off. I believe the guy who turned me down was the head of the national Putt-Putt (I wanna say Clayton as the last name, but not sure)--I am almost sure he was involved with the TV show, which by '75 was long gone. And, I don't think that the local course lasted more than 3 years.

if www.ppatv.com still works, there should be a Putt-Putt tournament you can view online...it was much like the TV show. Ths would never work today on television, despite 847 channels....!!
