4—Tonight Starring Jack Paar

"Jack Paar" on KXLY isn't a typo. I'm not sure for how long, but it appears that KHQ pre-empted The Tonight Show. Perhaps they felt their 20th Century Fox movie package was more lucrative. How many NBC affiliates across the country opted to not show Tonight in the late '50s and early '60s? Was it unusual for CBS (or ABC) affiliates to pick it up?

Also pre-empted by KHQ on this day: Today (Was it commonplace in those days for NBC affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone to not air the tree-hours-old Today?) and Michael Shayne.

WBZ Boston preempted Tonight until September 1966. They were a Westinghouse station and aired Group W syndicated programming (Steve Allen, PM East/PM West, Merv Griffin) instead. WHDH (ABC until 1/1/61, CBS after) picked it up.

It's been mentioned many times on the board over the years, but KYW-TV Cleveland also pre-empted Tonight until from 1957-February 28, 1966..Tonight was aired on ABC affiliate WEWS-5..

Here's a Vintage Media Blog post I wrote over a year ago that details the entire late night history of WNBK/KYW/WKYC from about 1950-Present
