Re: Retro: St. John’s Saturday December 21, 1991

A couple of quick notes: Home and Away is an Australian soap which is still on the air to this day in that country; Blake’s 7 and Red Dwarf ran on the BBC in the U.K. for multiple seasons; Space: 1999 was also another U.K. Sci-Fi series that ran for some time.

I have a Sunday listing from the same Saturday edition of the Evening Telegram that will appear in a new thread very soon. That day’s listing starts at 5:00 A.M.

Re: Retro: St. John’s Saturday December 21, 1991

With Newfoundland an hour and a half ahead of Eastern time, it's intreresting to note that "Hockey Night In Canada" (then still doing a single game each week) didn't start until 9:30 P.M. local.

With the time difference, I wonder if back then, many Newfoundlanders stayed up quite late to catch late-night TV shows from American stations on their local cable systems. After all, in 1991, Johnny Carson aired in Newfoundland weeknights from 1 to 2 A.M.

Today, though, the second "HNIC" game in Newfoundland starts at 11:30 P.M. local and doesn't end until after 2 A.M. local.

During the winter in Newfoundland, Saturday Morning Kids Shows from the US ended about the time it was dark.

Revisiting this thread...

After Global Edmonton (CITV) was added to most of the rest of Newfoundland and Labrador's cable systems, seeing as Mountain Time is 3½ hours behind Newfoundland time, in the winter, kids' programming would end at 8:30 PM NT as it was on for the entire morning and afternoon. This is no longer the case now as most kids' shows are now on the cable networks, leaving only a small portion on the local stations. Though not a kids' show, The Littlest Hobo, which ran on CTV 1979-85, is still airing in reruns on that network. I saw a rerun just this morning.
