On Saturday's Florida-Florida State telecast, Lundquist related a little anecdote Summerall had told during the dinner: Summerall spent a semester at Florida State as a graduate assistant football coach, and also taught a class in bowling. But the university had no lanes, or even bowling balls, so all they did in class was discuss and give tests on the rules of bowling!

No surprise.

For a couple of years in the 1960's, back when CBS had different commentary tandems for each NFL club, Pat Summerall was the analyst for Dallas games. Once this system was scrapped, Summerall rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the lead play-by-play man.

Summerall's years as a lead play-by-play man for NFL telecasts paralleled the era when the Dallas Cowboys were one of the NFL's elite teams, and since he worked for networks (CBS, later Fox) that carried most of Dallas' games, he saw a lot of "America's Team" over his career.

And during his final couple of years for Fox, Summerall did a handful of NFL games, usually Dallas home games.
