Retro: This Week in TV Guide, November 17, 1962 - MSP Edition

It's Thanksgiving week (early in 1962 just as it is this year), and that means parades, football, and specials.  The Packers and Lions play one of the most storied Thanksgiving Day games in NFL history, Pat Boone gets down with Peter, Paul and Mary, and the profile of Jack Lord shows a young man who wants to make it big, big!  Stoney Burke isn't the series that gets him there, but that doesn't mean he won't make it big.

Great entry! Funny about the new 5-0 in name only - every time the promo ran in yesterday's Pats-Colts game either my brother or I would say "What would happen if Jack Lord came down from TV Heaven and saw this?". I actually don't mind the new show, but it helps if you approach it as "CSI: Hawaii" rather than 5-0.

I have the Eastern New England TV Guide for Thanksgiving 1957. Here are the listings for the parades:

4-10 Thanksgiving Day Parade - Macy's (NBC)
The annual Thanksgiving Day Parade put on by Macy's in New York City is seen in a one-hour telecast. Cameras are stationed near the windup point of the parade on 34th St. Hugh O'Brien as Wyatt Earp is gran marshal. Celebrities taking part in the parade include Farley Granger, Bill "Hopalong Cassidy" Boyd and his horse Topper, Margaret O'Brien, and Eddie Foy, Jr.

5 Thanksgiving Eve Parade - Bamberger's (delayed from the previous evening - this was WHDH channel 5's first day on the air) (ABC)
The annual Thanksgiving Eve Parade of Light of Bamberger's department store is tlecast from Weequahic Park, Newark, N.J. John Daly does the commentary. Santa Claus leads the parade and celebrities participate.

Very cool on the listings, particularly that ABC used to cover the Hudson's parade. I know we've gotten a one-hour syndicated version from time to time in the past few years, but I always used to enjoy that parade a lot when it was on CBS - gave me a hint as to what the weather would be for the Lions game (back when that mattered).

It' kind of ironic on the football, isn't it? Texas and A&M don't play each other at all anymore (at least for the near future), and a lot of people think that '62 game was the last straw for Lombardi as far as the Packers and Lions playing on Thanksgiving.

Love the 5-0 comment! Do you think he'd be saying, "Be here - aloha!" about the new series?
 
Retro Turkey Day Telecast

There had to be a typo in the "Captain Kangaroo" listing for Thanksgiving Day, 1962.

I didn't think the show was broadcast in color until the Fall of 1965.

For Maureen Carney:

Did the New England edition of TV Guide for November 23rd-29th, 1957 indicate who did the commentary for NBC's broadcast of the Macy's Parade?? Could it have been either the team of Chet Huntley and David Brinkley, or perhaps Dave Garroway??

I try to figure out which would annoy him more - that Chevy is a sponsor (he insisted on Mercurys because he once sold them before becoming an actor), Kono is a woman or too much of McGarrett and Dano's personal life.

You're correct -a misplaced cut/paste. It was actually the NBC Macy's coverage that was in color. Thanks!

I think I'll go for the personal life part. Aside from the pilot, I'm not sure McGarrett had one! But seriously, I think we see far too much of far too many characters' private lives nowadays. I'd rather the writers put a little more effort into concocting a better episode plot.
