Retro: This Week in TV Guide, November 3, 1973 - MN State Edition

The great Jim McKay, only a year after his historic reporting of the Munich Olympics massacre, is the focal point of this week's issue. But there's more: In Concert vs. The Midnight Special, a ratings win for the World Series, and - well, did Deirdre Lenihan ever become the Next Big Thing?

http://www.itsabouttv.com/2012/11/this-week-in-tv-guide-november-3-1973.html

I'll have a snapshot of some daily listings later this week. In the meantime as always, your comments, positive and negative, are welcome.

Notes:
• Times certainly are different, aren't they? Look at all the religious programming on Sunday morning.
• As far as I know, in all the years Channel 4 never carried the CBS Sunday morning lineup of “Lamp Unto My Feet,” “Look Up and Live” and “Camera Three,” nor were they ever shown on any other Twin Cities channel.
• Channel 4 showed local news/”Woodcraft Hobby Show”/”Let’s Go Skiing” in “CBS Children’s Film Festival” Saturday afternoon slot; it was always shown on Sunday morning instead, preempting those network shows listed above.
• Channel 10 showed local movies in “The Rookies” Monday night slot; hence it’s showing on Sunday night.
• Apropos of today being Election Day, the episode of “Columbo” is “Candidate for Crime,” which I mention here http://www.itsabouttv.com/2012/10/12-for-2012-top-political-movies.html.

Mitchell H:

You must have made a typo for in posting the TV listings for November 4th, 1975, you indicated that WCCO-4 carried various programs and an NFL game from CBS between 12 Noon and 3 P.M. Central time.

According to Shrp Sports.com, the Minnesota Vikings were at home that day (an NFC team hosting an AFC club was the only way NBC could carry an NFC game back then). I suspect that WCCO, as a CBS station, could not carry any early-afternoon (12:05 P.M. CT) NFL game because the Vikings were playing in a televised home game.

I believe that ever since 1973, when the NFL first allowed sold-out games to be televised in the city they were being played in (and on stations in other markets within 75 miles of the home team's city), if a local team's home game was being televised, no out-of-town game could be televised in the home team's city at the same time.

You are indeed correct - channel 4 didn't carry the Vikings game that day. Ghastly mistake on my part - I must have been too focused on them not carrying Camera Three! :) Thanks for the catch!

That brings to mind stories of bars in The Cities that set up some fairly elaborate, tall antennas to pick up the Mason City, Iowa CBS affiliate channel 3 KGLO-TV (now KIMT) 120 miles south. I think KGLO was reprimanded by the FCC back around this time for operating with unauthorized reduced power during NFL games...seems the Viking brass got a little too chummy with KGLO.

Maybe someone more familiar with this story can weigh in...

I'm receiving a Minnesota TVG from 1958 on Friday. I'll post those listings soon.
