Retro: This Week in TV Guide, October 19, 1968 - MSP Edition

Here is where we really begin to see the difference between televised sports today and that from back in 1968. The Summer Olympics were on ABC - 14 1/2 hours for the entire week! College football - one game. NFL - one game. AFL - two games. NHL - one game. There are many reasons for the change over the years, but it's still striking to see it.

Also, another installment of Sullivan vs. The Palace, Jim Nabors sings, Richard Harris sings, and some random notes on the embryonic stages of three future series.

As always your comments, positive and negative, are welcome.

I have this edition, but it's a central Pennsylvania issue. I loved your comment about having two sets out to watch the AFL and NFL at the same time. I used to do that with NFL games when the then-CBS affiliates in Boston and Providence would run different games back in the 80s.

Question: why don't you post the local Twin Cities TV listings as well?
Good thought. I'll get this issue out and do it this week, and for future weeks I'll start adding the listings for a random day.

Then I wasn't alone! :) What games were they showing in your edition?

My mistake - it's a actually an Eastern New England (Boston, Providence, Hartford, Manchester and Worcester) edition. I got it mixed up in my mind. Anyway, here are the games scheduled:

Saturday
2:15p - College Football (6-7-8-9) - Alabama vs. Tennessee
4:30p - Horse Racing (5-10) The Man o' War $100,000 Added (5 was the Boston CBS affiliate and 10 was the Providence NBC station)
8:00p - NHL Hockey (38) - Boston Bruins at Pittsburgh Penguins
9:00p - NBA Basketball (56) - Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls

Sunday
1:30p - NFL (3-5-12) San Francisco 49ers at New York Giants
2:00p - College Football Highlights (8-9) Pittsburgh vs. Navy
4:00p - AFL (4-10) New York Jets at Houston Oilers

And there were various airings of Roller Derby, wrestling and bowling on many stations
