Pardo claims the reason he didn't do this season was head writer Michael O'Donoghue disliked him. O'Donoghue even wanted Pardo to be fired on air, but when O'Donoghue was fired mid season that paved the way for Pardo's return.

I've read that that season, as well as the season before (1980-81), were considered the worst in SNL history.
