I assume "Prisoner: Cell Block H" was a rerun on the stations that showed it?

It was an Australian drama about inmates in a women's prison and it was syndicated in the U.S. intended for play in early prime time (between 7 and 8 PM ET, just before the big 3 networks would start feeding their prime time schedule every weeknight) starting back in the late 1970s. By 1980-81 it had run its course in the United States, partly because it was too hot for a lot of stations to handle. It was pretty frank for its time and a lot of markets didn't carry it as a result. The CBS affiliate in Buffalo, NY, WIVB-TV, carried it at 7 PM ET following Walter Cronkite and the CBS Evening News, and got good numbers with it until it went out of syndication...other markets in the Great Lakes region either carried it late at night or didn't carry it at all. I don't know if the Aussies kept it in production for domestic viewing or other syndicated markets after its American market dried up.

They would be reruns, production ended in 1986. Wikipedia has a page on the show at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner_(TV_series) , Section 4 deals with its scheduling in the UK.

I suspect WIVB was in a minority; I don't recall many stations
carrying "Prisoner: Cell Block H" in access time (the show was
hardly family-friendly), but I do know that WGN carried it in
daytime, and in some cities (like Louisville) it was on at or after
11 PM. I think a few stations tried the other Australian soap
that was syndicated in the U.S. around 1980, "The Sullivans,"
in access time but apparently without much success.

Many of Prisoner Cell Block 'H' 's fans used to complain in letters columns of newspapers about the way it was used as late night filler, with the slots moving around from week to week, and different episodes showing in different regions at different times. I suppose its cult success in the UK led eventually to the British TV series 'Bad Girls'

Still so much variation between the different ITV companies back then- within a decade or so we would be down to 2 companies for England and Wales, and within 15 years just one.

In Philadelphia, "Prisoner" was on at 5 pm on then-NBC affil KYW-TV, right after "The Mike Douglas
(later John Davidson) Show," from March 1980 to April 1981.
