The Virginia Pilot must have had a lot of trouble what was on WVEC 13 at the time in November 1979.

First off, Laverne And Shirley moved to Thursdays in the fall of 1979 and Angie moved to Tuesdays in that time slot after Happy Days and Mork And Mindy moved to Sundays. Benson replaced Angie in that Thursday time slot and usually Out Of The Blue was on Sundays after Mork and Mindy in place of Benson unless the Benson episode was a repeat episode (possibly a repeat of the first episode).

Next, Baretta was cancelled in the summer of 1978 and they were showing Charlie's Angels in 1979 at 9:00 PM and Vega$ at 10:00 PM, so unless this Baretta episode was a syndicated rerun there was no possible way that Baretta would have aired at that time since it had been cancelled the year before and ABC was still showing Baretta reruns on their late night schedule.

I thought that Hart To Hart premiered in December 1979 after The Lazarus Syndrome, the medical show with Lou Gossett Jr. was cancelled.

CORRECTION ON ABC - WVEC CHANNEL 13

You're right. I actually did not copy prime time schedules directly from the paper but cut and pasted the prime time stuff to save time from anothr market WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN ACCURATE. Any innacuracies here are indeed innacurate there because the prime time schedules are nationwide except for a local preemption here and there. So I reviewed the prime time schedule I found no preemptions in prime time. Also the NBC and CBS schedules were accurate except for a couple shows with 2 hour special episodes just for that week. They were 95 % accurate but for some reason ABC was off quite a bit. I wonder how I got ABC so wrong. Part of it was some of the switch arounds were later in the season reversed back. Here is the prime time schedule on Channel 13 directly from the paper

Sunday November 4

7 PM SALVAGE ONE-Drama
8 PM MORK & MINDY-Comedy
8:30 MOVIE - Jaws (1975) -RAN TILL 11:30

Monday November 5

8 PM 240 ROBERT-Drama (That's Incredible was 3 months away)
9 PM NFL FOOTBALL - Houston Oilers At Miami Dolphins (I got this from NFL sources so this was accurate)

Tuesday November 6

8 PM HAPPY DAYS-Comedy
8:30 ANGIE-Comedy (Laverne & Shirley moved back in 1980 sometime)
9 PM THREE'S COMPANY-Comedy
9:30 TAXI-Comedy
10 PM HART TO HART-Drama (Actually began in August Of 1979 and moved here October according to Brooks & Marsh as well as this schedule)

Wednesday November 7
8 PM EIGHT IS ENOUGH-Comedy/Drama
9 PM CHARLIE'S ANGELS-Drama
10 PM VEGAS-Drama (Where on earth did I get Baretta??? probably a typo from other schedule)

Thursday November 8

8 PM LAVERNE & SHIRLEY-Comedy (RIGHT AGAIN - I WAS WRONG AGAIN)
8:30 BENSON-Comedy
9 PM BARNEY MILLER-Comedy
9:30 SOAP-Comedy
10 PM 20/20-Newsmagazine

Friday November 9
8 PM FAMILY FEUD SPECIAL
9 PM ABC MOVIE - Topper (1979) WAS ACCURATE

Saturday November 10
8 PM LOVE BOAT-Comedy/Drama (Actually shown as 8 PM with nothing shown for 9 PM - probably a 2 Parter. Ropers and Detective School still normally aired here for another 2 months and 2 weeks respectively. Detective was canceled 2 weeks later)
9 PM LOVE BOAT-Comedy Drama
10 PM FANTASY ISLAND-Fantasy

Also the late night schedule needed correction as well. each show should be pushed up half an hour. Nightline premiered on Thursday November 8, 1979 but was not included in the listings just yet. This was a last minute change. I just estimated Nightline began on a Monday but it actually began late week. It would be several months until it was determined that it would be on for good.

Now I still cannot understand how I had such an innacurate ABC schedule. I should be more careful and examine entire prime time schedules to make sure they are correct before cutting and pasting plus make sure there are no local preemptions.

Thanks for bringing this matter up.

"Hart To Hart" actually debuted on Saturday following "The Love
Boat," but when "The Lazarus Syndrome" tanked (unfairly, I think),
it got the Tuesday 10 PM slot, while "Fantasy Island" returned to
Saturday.

I was also not aware that WVEC ever carried ABC News at 7.
I thought that at the time they still did their local news at 5:30,
followed by ABC News at 6, then movies from 6:30-8. I also
thought they carried "Edge Of Night" at 4.

I definitely have to locate a TV Guide from this period.

You're correct about Edge of Night. WVEC 13 was one of the few ABC affiliates to run that show. They actually ran Family Feud and Laverne & Shirley in the mornings. They actually ran a movie at 6:30 PM for some reason and ran ABC News at 6 PM. WVEC had an even wierder schedule than I could ever imagine. I must have gotten channel 13's mixed up with another market schedule.

Minor nitpick and then a comment:

I'm going to assume that the noon show on WVEC was actually the $20,000 Pyramid; the $25,000 was the syndicated version which had left the air in '79.

Also, I am not sure that airing ABC News at 6pm (for affils in EST) was not all that uncommon. WTPA (now WHTM) in Harrisburg did it for a good part of the '70s, going all the way into September 1981. Up until then, ABC News aired at 6 and "Happy Days Again" at 6:30.

As far as L&S and FF running in the morning, that was the norm for the ABC daytime lineup in the mornings. Such a shame that 90 minute block of good comedy and 2 games was broken up a bit later on...

Running ABC News at 6 was fairly common at the time, and I distinctly remember that in Virginia WVEC and Lynchburg's WSET did so.
I still don't remember WVEC ever carrying ABC News at 7.

Also, at the time Laverne & Shirley aired at 11 AM, Feud at 11:30, and $20,000 Pyramid at 12. It would be hard to find many affiliates that ran all three in pattern, since many stations had a noon newscast, but I recall at the time that WGHP High Point, NC; WCTI New Bern, NC;
WTVC Chattanooga; and WLKY Louisville were among those that did carry all three in pattern (that's by no means a complete list, just the ones that immediately come to mind).

As well, it wasn't called Nightline til the next spring. At first it was called "America Held Hostage". And it's interesting to see that it didn't start til five days into the hostage crisis (can you believe that was 30 years ago already?

I can't even believe that it's already been 10 years since everyone was going ga-ga over the "New Millenium" (despite the fact that said new millenium should technically have been celebrated on New Years 2001, but I won't re-open that whole controversial can o'worms), we were all breathing a sigh of relief that the Y2K bug didn't produce mass chaos, and the notion of terrorists flying hijacked airliners into buildings was still just a plot element in unrealistic action films and novels. Time passes way too quickly... :(

Monday-Friday
6 AM ED ALLEN
6:30 NEWS 13
7 AM GOOD MORNING AMERICA
9 AM GOOD MORNING TIDEWATER
10:30 DATING GAME-Game
11 AM LAVERNE & SHIRLEY-Comedy
11:30 FAMILY FEUD-Game
12 PM 25,000 DOLLAR PYRAMID-Game
12:30 RYAN’S HOPE-Serial
1 PM ALL MY CHILDREN-Serial
2 PM ONE LIFE TO LIVE-Serial
3 PM GENERAL HOSPITAL-Serial
4 PM EDGE OF NIGHT-Serial
4:30 HAPPY DAYS-Comedy
5 PM ALL IN THE FAMILY-Comedy
5:30 NEWS 13
6 PM ABC NEWS
6:30 MOVIE 13 - (Cannot find titles airing)

Nitpick: I've gotten two ABC stations on Ch. 13
over the years, and one way I can distinguish them
is that WVEC's newscast is called "13 News," while
WLOS calls theirs "News 13." That's been going on
since at least the early '80s.

I don't like to say "I told you so," but I knew my
memory was correct about "Edge Of Night" and
about ABC News airing at 6. The only ABC affiliates
south of Washington that I know ever carried the
network news at 7 are:

WSET (very briefly in 2005)
WRAL Raleigh (roughly 1982 until it went to CBS in '85)
WSOC Charlotte (most of the '80s)
WXIA Atlanta (1978 until it went to NBC in '80)
WSB Atlanta (1980-present)
WTVC Chattanooga ('80s-early '90s)
WPLG Miami ('70s and '80s)
and I think WTSP Tampa-St. Petersburg may have around
1977 or '78, very briefly

WNCF Montgomery, AL carries it at 6 (CT)

6 AM TIDEWATER TODAY
7 AM TODAY
9 AM JOKERS WILD-Game
9:30 TIC TAC DOUGH-Game
10 AM CARD SHARKS-Game
10:30 HOLLYWOOD SQUARES-Game
11 AM WHEEL OF FORTUNE-Game
11:30 HIGH ROLLERS-Game
12 PM MINDREADERS-Game
12:30 HELLO VIRGINIA-Talk
1 PM DAYS OF OUR LIVES-Serial
2 PM DOCTORS-Serial
2:30 ANOTHER WORLD-Serial
4 PM PASSWORD PLUS-Game
4:30 NEWLYWED GAME-Game
5 PM M*A*S*H-Comedy
5:30 NEWS 10
6 PM NEWS 10
6:30 NBC NEWS
7 PM FAMILY FEUD-Game
7:30 MUPPET SHOW-Variety/Children

I'm confused about this one. Another schedule from the (Raleigh) News & Observer shows the following:

- "Password Plus" at 9 a.m.,
- a movie from 4 to 5:30 p.m., and
- "The Newlywed Game" at 7 p.m.

Also, nighttime Feud didn't go five-nights-a-week until the fall of 1980, so these obviously must be prime-access checkerboard shows.
