Perhaps a neutral subject is in order. A few weeks ago, on another board, there was a good discussion about local Top 40 radio of the past. Did the old WAPE/other pop stations at the time mirror what Billboard reported or did we break out songs earlier or move on them later independent of Billboard?
Was the Jax market big into Motown in the 60's and disco of the 70's or did we lean more on the rock side even back then? Curious too if the Beatles remained popular here even after the controversy of the "Jesus" remark.
That other board talked a little bit about “Call Out Research.” Today, that would be dumb but did WAPE just randomly call people from the phonebook to get opinions about songs, the station etc.?
For those involved or for those who lived in Jax during the old AM heyday of Top 40 radio, I would bet there’s a lot of interesting stories to be told. Lots of stations used to do a Top 100 at the end of the year. That could tell a story right there. I’m not sure if WAPE did that or if it available anywhere online. Let’s see if this goes anywhere…..
