Whether or not they're "brave" depends on if they aired the censored CTV version or the naughty Showtime version. In Tampa Bay, WTSP also carried Bizarre, though I don't know whether or not it was censored.
 
I'm pretty sure WMAR-TV ran sitcoms instead of Carson to make some extra cash from ad revenue. It should be noted that about six months later Carson moved to WNUV-TV once WBFF took The Late Show with Joan Rivers from Fox.

Also, what was pre-empted on WJZ-TV in the 4:00 hour in favor of the Afterschool Special?
