WTVP-47 still signed off between 10:30AM-3PM at the time of this schedule (as they had since their June 1971 sign-on), but only 10 days later on June 1 they would start broadcasting all day (although on Saturdays and Sundays they would sign-on late, at least to noon, until the early '90s).

I suppose they figured that kids went to school during the day and parents worked, so they just didn't feel that they could draw an audience. Stations used to go off the air for the night between 11pm and 1am too. It's more of a 24hr world now so they all run overnight. Speaking of Springfield (&Decatur), most of your channels were semi-locals that I'd watch if the local station booted a network show for a special presentation. Channel 20 seemed the strongest-Analog days. Did you ever do the same with Peoria-Bloomington channels? If so, which came in the strongest? Thanks...

I would think that WTVP would be on the air during the day with in-school programming, especially on this day, when school was likely still in session. Keep in mind that TVG usually don't list in-school programming -- juts mentioning on the Channels Listed page that the station carries in-school programming during the day.

I never thought of that. Thanks..

WTVP did not offer school programming they were actually off the air at those hours.

I actually grew up between Peoria and the Quad Cities, so I had both markets. Despite living much closer to Peoria, in my bedroom TV I had better reception (and IMO better quality stations) with Quad Cities' ABC and Fox stations (WQAD and KLJB, respectively) rather than their Peoria/Bloomington counterparts (WHOI and WYZZ).

When I moved to Springfield in late 2002 and was cable-less my first 10 months here, I was forced to rely on WMBD for CBS (and it actually came in quite well--particularly at night). This was within months after Nexstar converted WCFN-49 (now WCIX) from a repeater of Champaign-based CBS affiliate WCIA-3 to a standalone UPN. VHF reception of any kind in this apartment was mostly hopeless--even the PBS repeater on channel 8 for WSEC-14 (despite being 5 miles from their stick)--no trace of WCIA at all here and only a handful of nights that a faint signal from KHQA-7 in Quincy might appear on screen (although the audio from the Quincy stations were somewhat frequent guests in my part of Springfield at night as my radio had a VHF audio tuner).

I live on the opposite side of Peoria, and Quad Cities (and Hannibal-Quincy) were always extremely poor to receive (except channel 8). Even DXing with rabbit ears, stations to the northwest were scarce. I used most of the Springfield-Champaign channels as substitutes for network shows bumped in Peoria. 15&27 were rare and I never got 14 or 49. All the others were fair to good though. You probably had more trouble with 43 as their transmitter was a little farther from you, in Congerville (And I assume it still is??) I'm surprised about WCIA though. Maybe they were forced to lower their analog power in later years. Was surprised about the WCIX call letters, as ch6 in Miami had it for years.
