Retro: Western Illinois, Monday, November 23, 1970

These listings are interesting (at least to me) because they show the schedule for the ill-fated WJJY-TV/14, an ABC affiliate in Jacksonville that targeted the Quincy market and also reached Springfield. The station went on the air on August 18, 1969 and went dark sometime in April of 1971. You can read more about WJJY-TV here: http://www.brainmist.com/wjjy_tv/wjjy_tv.htm

Great find! I have been interested in WJJY and to share a listing is awesome!

Any idea if the 7:30 and 8:30am shows were from the state educational system that WJJY used to fill their schedule?

I think it's safe to assume that "Classroom" at 10AM was from OSPI/WILL-TV in Urbana. I have no idea about the programs between 7:30 and 10AM. I would imagine the "Film" at 9AM originated at WJJY, but I have no way to verify.

And ironically WJJY was the only ABC station in this listing to air "All My Children" in pattern--while the then-10 1/2 month old soap was delayed on KTVO and WQAD and "didn't play in Peoria" on WIRL (now WHOI) at the time.

And when did listings for Iowa Public Television station KIIN-12 (Iowa City--later listed as "12W" in black on white channel bullets) first appear in the Western IL edition? IIRC KIIN may have signed on in '70 as the second station for what is now IPTV (the first being KDIN-11 Des Moines, which dates back to about 1959).

I don't know for sure when the Western Illinois Edition started including listings for KIIN. However, there is a KDIN/KIIN ad in this issue for Julia Child at 6:30 on Sunday evening.

I remember watching the original sign-on for KIIN on a Sunday afternoon at 4 in either February or March of 1970. And that ended the life of mystery channel 12 when I was a kid. The only channel 12 I knew of was about 200 miles northwest at Mankato MN. So, my imaginary TV station was on channel 12. Another kid in my class said on his TV, channel 12 was all cartoons, all the time. So it was a novelty to finally see clear pictures on channel 12.

And ironically WJJY was the only ABC station in this listing to air "All My Children" in pattern--while the then-10 1/2 month old soap was delayed on KTVO and WQAD and "didn't play in Peoria" on WIRL (now WHOI) at the time.

I'm not sure when Ch. 19 added "All My Children," but Chs. 8 & 19 were running AMC in pattern at noon a long time before Ch. 3 ever did. Over the years, Ch. 3 aired AMC at 4:30, 3:30, 10:00, back to 3:30 (I think when it expanded to an hour), and finally in pattern at noon (in 1981 when the noon news was cancelled).

Peoria
25 WEEK-TV (NBC)

For Programs on 35 LaSalle, see 25

Channel 35 in Lasalle was WEEQ, which would later become WWTO, the TBN O&O targeting the Chicagoland area. WEEQ would close down sometime around 1973 (according to WWTO's Wikipedia article, WEEQ was listed in the 1973 Broadcasting Yearbook but not the 1974 edition). WWTO would sign on channel 35 in 1986.

From the looks of this and the Nov. 21 schedule that has just been posted, it appears that other than the noon Farm Report, WIRL (now WHOI) had shut down their news department for some time.

In addition to the noon farm report, WIRL had news at 5:30PM and 10PM on weekdays (they were delayed till 11 because of football on this schedule), and 10PM on Sundays.
