Return of Peach 94.9 WPCH-FM to Atlanta???

How about a fm talk format on Peach 94.9? Hell, nobody can pick up WGST-AM.

If the put news/talk on 94.9, that would probably be an excellent idea. But calling such a station "The Peach" would be one of the most damn-fool stupid things anyone could possibly do. I mean, only a total blooming idiot would ever consider naming a news/talk station after any sort of fruit, even one that was the official state fruit of Georgia. But to talk an old station nickname for a music format station and bring it back from the dead to put on a news/talk station is just totally beyond belief. Naming a news/talk station "The Peach" is just plain ridiculous. I don't think I could ever take anyone seriously about anything if they actually, seriously put that idea forth seriously.

Actually, it would seem that the folks at channel 17 would have something to say about the deal, which would probably not happen anyway because more peaches are grown in Macon anyway.

Although you have a point about Macon--WPCH-FM is licensed to Gray, just north of Macon.

In Pittsburgh, Clear Channel put news/talk on 104.7, and it was a major ratings success. They did not name it after a fruit, they called it "News/Talk 104.7". It prety much rubbed heritage station KDKA-AM's nose in the dirt.

If WGST goes to FM, it would most likely be known as "NewsRadio 94.9 WGST" or "94.9 WGST" with either the WGST or the WGST-FM callsign. This would basically be another 1989, when WGST moved from 920 to 640 (only this time the move would be from AM to FM). I don't think they would completly blow up a station and callsign with 80+ years of heritage (on second thought...).

But even on FM (as demonstrated with the 640/105.7 simulcast in the 90's, when WGST went from first to worst), they have their work cut out.

Remember, this is Clear Channel...they flipped a top 5 station (94.9 - which is another first to worst story). Moving WGST to FM might give them some credibility (which CC has none in Atlanta right now)...although bringing back AC might give them even more.

Also in Pittsburgh, CBS attempted a "lite" talk format on 92.9 called "The Man Station". It bombed miserably.

CBS did something similar in several markets called "Free FM"...a complete failure. All of them except for the LA station (which I think renamed) are gone.

And CC did it here in Atlanta in 2004...Real Radio 105.3. Flipped in 7 months.

WGST clobbered WSB when WSB wasn't paying attention. Once Cox gave up on progtalk and beat WGST at their own game, WGST started losing share. But WGST did respectably hang on and try to make an honest effort to keep a full schedule (bringing in Hannity against Boortz, for example). They didn't drop to their 1-2 share until they started mailing it in against WSB. Bottom line: You can't make chicken salad out of chicken scratch.

I made a joke about Planet Radio on another thread. However, comparing WGST today to Planet Radio would be an insult...to Planet Radio. Somewhere, Tammy Lloyd is laughing her tail off. At least Planet Radio had share.

The change from “Peach” to “Lite” was the result of a couple of slight slips in the books. Their management and programming department concluded that their superb programming abilities were being hampered by the frumpy image of the “Peach.” So they went into the creative think tank for several weeks and low and behold what did the CC programming clown show emerge with. . . “Lite!” Cool, beans, huh?

Without being burdened with that worn out “Peach” brand and their programming expertise in high gear they were on their way to a rapid increase in the ratings. . . .utt ohh. From that point, they crashed into Atlanta’s non-top ten rankings.

I have to say that most of the CC Atlanta staff could not believe that the “Peach” was being replaced with “Lite.” At that time “Peach” was the only CC top ten station, and the only station keeping CC somewhat close to their sales budget. Well, no longer.

You have to admit, to kill the one top ten station on your watch and being able to keep your other stations out of the top ten takes a lot of _________. Hmmmmm, what word that word be??

That sounds like the "Martini" format mentioned on another thread on this exact same subject.

Yeah, but more mainstream. But something different enough from B98.5 so as to not try to compete with them head-on, and not the same old Air Supply/Ambrosia soft AC, and not the same old BM that made Peach (in)famous.

As an "environmental" format it might do well in the age of PPMs.

They swicthed to country because the previuos format ratings were down so that would not make much sense. I don't see anyone taking down the River,because Cox knows how to program a station. The River could crush True Oldies if it wanted too.

River is tied for #8 and was #5 in the book before that. It may take a hit as Rock 100.5 and True Oldies get traction, but River isn't going anywhere any time soon. Cox will see to that.

You can have a radio station with a googolplex song playlist but if you only rotate 100 of them, it's still burn.

Yeah, but of those 5,000 songs, 4,700 of them are never played. And of the 300 that they do play, 280 of those suck.

As for Spiff, what difference does it make who reads the liner cards between the songs? If the songs suck, the station sucks.

I totally disagree!!!!!!! I listen to True Oldies 106.7 often and I do hear the very large playlist. I also do not hear many songs that "suck". I think, just maybe, Biz Listener is confused and is listening to 97.1 the river. They do play the same songs that suck over and over again. Biz listener, adjust your radio dial to 106.7 and hear the True Oldies. They, do indeed play the 5,000 song playlist. Contact Scott Shannon and ask him about it. He welcomes comments and gives out his e-mail address over the air as [email protected]. On the local shows, they have been playing many great Oldies as well. Spiff also sounds great. I am hearing True Oldies 106.7 WYAY-FM in many stores and restaurants. I really think that they are catching on!

WHAT... You don't like David Cassidy and the Partridge Family? So Biz I take it you don't like the Archies or the 1910 Fruitgum Company either? Shame! But seriously those songs are not core artists and are not played that often but at least True Oldies goes out of the way to please a lot of oldies fans with a vast playlist. BTW a Great Elvis weekend coming on the anniversary of his passing. Some rarely heard songs on the radio and that will be a lot of fun. ;D

I have analyzed their 11:00 a.m. playlist from this morning and came to the realization that in fact one of favorite songs is not coming on next. Just a bunch of song I just assume not hear again.

The thing is, the tight-playlist, test-it-to-within-an-inch-of-it's-life, squeeze-out-all-the-good-stuff-consultants won't let any radio station play a song like that. Cassidy's hits with the Partridge Family that they play on oldies radio aren't like that one you linked to.

As for music from the 70's, that was the golden age of rock, when classic rock was recorded. But the good stuff was what they played on AOR format FM stations in the 70's, not the crap they played on the Top 40 AM stations.
