Return Of Rhodes

Looks like Entercom had a plan when they sent Leslie Marshall packing a few weeks back. Unless it was an accident, Randi Rhodes (and a slice of Air America) is back in Buffalo, airing on KB 1520 in afternoon drive. So now KB has two good progressive talkers back to back, with Ed Schultz doing noon to 3, going head to head with Rush and Randi Rhodes following Schultz, going head to head with Beach.

In a way, it's mildly amusing, considering that a few days ago, Schultz spent the first hour of his show ripping into Air America and half of its line-up. He did manage to say he like Stephanie Miller and Randi Rhodes. Contrived?

Does this indicate that Entercom Buffalo is serious about making a go of KB as a progressive talker? It's not a bad line-up from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Bill Press may be the weak link in the line-up. He's not a bad talkmeister, but he's not a morning guy and his is not a morning show.

If KB had local news, sports, traffic and weather in morning drive, it might jump start the rest of the day. That's a big "if."

The Package

I can hear WBEN sales people now...

"Buy WBEN, and we'll throw in KB Free!"

Hey, that could be their new slogan - "KB Free"

WBEN 930 is to WWKB 1520 like 870 WHCU is to 1470 WNYY in Ithaca; two stations owned by the same company with talk formats that are on different ends of the political spectrum. Who cares- the money each station generates is still going into the same pot....

So like I said...a WBEN NEWS repeater to fill news content, at the very least, would be smart...
How much does that cost to run?

Not like Randi Rhodes is going to make a difference, is it? Regardless of the political bent, the station can't even get arrested. KB has become the "107.7" of the AM band.

Steph does a great job - it's like the Daily Show for the radio. Randi Rhodes, when given a producer that reigns in her tendency to be repetitive, does a good job as well. She's tempermental, but one of the most interesting things about her show is her willingness to talk about the industry, including AAR, whose management she trashes semi-regularly. "Buh, bye" was her reaction to Franken leaving, and while Schultz may like her, she loathes him. She gets along well with Stephanie and vice-versa however.

Lionel talks more about the talk radio industry than just about any other show host. He especially loathes Glenn Beck these days.

It seems Entercom's WROC in Rochester has altered its schedule too. Ed. Shultz is now on live from noon to three in Al Franken's spot and Randi Rodes is now live in afternoon drive. WROC, in contrast to KB, does run local news & weather (from WROC -TV) and traffic reports. They, also seem to run their own spots, not just the spill overs from WBEE and their other stations. They do show up in the ratings. Not gang busters by any means, but I bet they have a good showing in younger, educated demos if you broke down the book.
My personal opinion: I like Ed Shultz & Stephanie Miller (Stephanie does excellent radio) but Randi seems to just go on and seems to be lecturing her audience not entertaining them.
