Review - 92.9 WBOS

Given that there are 6 other stations which play the same music as 'BOS, including 92-5/The River, which is almost as popular as 'BOS is - especially that River can only be heard north of the Mass Pike - I give 'BOS a major thumbs down.

Since I can hear the same music on other stations, time to give up rock, 'BOS!

I often think of them as the station of missed opportunity. Perhaps things will turn around with new programmer. John Laurenti is an asset. They should tap him as a resource.

Despite having perennially "low" ratings...I've heard that WBOS bills very well (i.e. brings in lots of ad dollars) so I wouldn't expect much in the way of changes to the programming unless the billing starts to slip.

That was in no way a review. I like WBOS. I like the River. I like WBOS's announcers more than those on the River, especially the new River morning person. I think John Laurenti is very talented and very knowledgeable about both Boston (having lived here his whole life) and about music. His conversations with Steve Morse are great, given that Morse has been on the music scene in Boston since Laurenti was a kid.

What I don't like about WBOS is the ads. I wish there were some way to make advertisers tailor their ads to the format instead of the obnoxious ads that play across the board. But that isn't going to happen and we will have to put up with commercials to pay the bills.

Long live WBOS. Love it.

Funny you should mention that about the ads. When Granum took over WBOS in early 1992, they patterned the station after their sister station in Florida, WMMO. That station did screen out loud obnoxious ads and would either recut them or turn away the business.

Good luck finding any operator in today's environment that would do that.
