Review - Classical 99.5 WCRB

I've heard a lot of people say that 'CRB is "dumbed-down" classical. Given that I don't know classical inside-out, maybe it is, but I can't really tell. Given its overall ratings, an indicator of dissatisfaction with edgy music creeping (or plowing) into most soft music's playlists, I can see why 'CRB does very well for a classical station. I also see the fact that the bulk of 'CRB's listeners are 50+ (I'm 44, will be 45 by summer's end), so for that reason I could've seen 'CRB totally disappear in favor of an Illegal Alien format.

Thumbs up, but warily so.

Next up: WZLX

a Weaker Signal cant keep this good station Down . Its to bad , there is bunch of Cowgirl music Junk, on WCRB former signal .

It would be nice to be able to hear them (25m South of Boston). The 102.5 signal was one of the best on the band. I used to have my clock radio set at 6am to CRB: no longer.

I have never seen a clock radio with a good FM tuner. The FM tuning sections in clock radios are all junk judging from every one I've ever seen. I wouldn't judge the quality of a signal by whether a clock radio can get it. Here in Somerville I have to tune mine to a Pru station three miles away if I want to be sure it will be there to wake me up. Even the stations from FM-128 ten miles away are marginal and may fade out on it, and on every clock radio I've ever owned. They're garbage.

My how we can get off topic! On a post about a radio station, one person mentions a clock radio and everyone chimes in about radios!

I worry about WCRB. We need a good classical music station and 'CRB can and should be much, much better.

This station is competing for an audience that can buy satalite radios for pocket change (present company excluded). If 'CRB doesn't treat their listeners like informed, knowledgable and discerning people, they'll lose their listener base.

If they just keep dumbing it down to where they're playing nothing but elevator music they may find a base of listeners, but they won't be a classical station.

So, at some point some suit will say that all this is "proof" that the classical format "doesn't pay". T

hen it'll be time for FMSports!

I tried to check your member profile to see if you had received one of those "MacArthur Genius Grants" because you stated exactly what I would have posted, so you must be a genius. Anyway, from time to time, I'm checking the playlist of WQXR-FM in New York City, owned by the New York Times. What does this have to do with WCRB? Well, every quarter, the New York Times Corporation seems to post a loss, and the suits in the Executive Suites say EVERY division of the Company will have to maximize revenue. So far, WQXR has remained an excellent classical music station (not perfect, but still high-up on the quality chart IMO); if dumbing-down the fare to easily accessible, short, orchestral-only selections is the key to ratings and financial success for a self-described "classical" station, WQXR would have followed this recipe by now...and they haven't!

I may or may not be a genius, but I know I can't get a decent job in radio. Any connection?

FPB...

Don't feel bad...there are many GREAT on-air people (besides yourself) who can't seem to get a decent job in radio.

I could use the cliche: It's the economy STUPID, but the plain and simple fact is that many program directors have been forced to hire non-talents who are willing to voice track for 2 or 3 different radio stations (owned by the same conglomerate) while doing a LIVE SHOW in the process?

Does it make them versatile? PERHAPS?
Does it save the FAT CATS in corporate a lot of money...ABSOLUTELY!!! :-*
