Review of the Best Virtual/Net-Only Dance Stations

HotMixRadio http://www.hotmixradio.com France
One of the biggest stations online for commercial and Crossover House music.
The liners are top of the line, and there’s even drops from some of the big artists (like the Shapeshifters introing their record). Their main reference is what’s charting on the French Dance chart: http://www.djbuzz.com/pages_charts/mondaychart.asp
There’s a total of 4 channels offered here, but the main one is the one focused on House Dance.

Radio Oz http://www.radiooz.net/ Australia
Funny liners with Scooby Doo are one of the charms associated with Radio Oz. It’s a cool Dance station that’ll play any type of good/decent Dance record in regular rotation, whether it’s House, Trance, Breaks, D N B, and commercial Dance. The high quality 96 K AAC stream makes it even more enjoyable.

Digitally Imported http://di.fm/ U.S.A.
A favorite with the Trance crowd, DI has an amazing lineup of weekly resident DJs. What started out as a jukebox for popular Trance anthems in the early part of the decade has grown to become one of the most respected online radio stations portal around. These days there’s a channel that caters to almost any kind of real Dance fan. Check out their DJ Mixes station, the Classic Electronica channel, or the new Techno channel, and maybe you’ll get it - why this is one of THE places for EDM music on the net. And since the website is now associated with SKY.FM there’s also channels for numerous other types of music genres (like Rock, Pop, Retro, New Age, and the awesome Classic Rap channel).
A couple of sidenotes: The House Channel focuses mainly on Midtempo and West Coast House. Also, once an hour you might hear an actual ad/commercial on some channels so don’t be alarmed.

Frisky Radio http://www.friskyradio.com/ U.S.A.
Big on Progressive House, Electro, Tech House, and anything else the Progressive camp is into these days. Nonstop mixes, including sets by some of the genres elite (Sasha, Dave Seaman, Flash Brothers). The station has launched Frisky nights at clubs all over the world including Chicago and Vienna. Furthermore, it has launched a record store to better serve its dedicated audience.

Ipartradio.com http://ipartyradio.com/ U.S.A
The cliffnotes: Dance hits with a strong lean on House music. The audio processing on the stream is better than great, the liners are professional, and the mixshows ROCK.

Rise FM http://www.risefm.com/ Denmark
Mainstream Dance channel with some very professional liners, and a strong lean on Trance and crossover Euro-Trance
There’s several weekly shows hosted by well-known DJs such as Agnelli & Nelson, Darren Tate, Matt Darey, Pedro Del Mar, and DJ Choose.

DNBRadio http://www.dnbradio.com/ UK
Can you handle this? The darker side of Electronica with nothing but wicked Drum N Bass and Jungle beats. Quite a few of these producers are trying to constantly push the envelope, enhance and enrich what you hear on a typical track. Good audio processing on this station too.

1Club.fm http://www.1club.fm/ U.S.A.
Your radio dial on CRACK! So many stations to choose from. More music stations then your FM dia with lots of great Dance stations to boot. Want some Breaks? Psy-Trance? Hard Dance? Ibiza Anthems? Mainstream Dance? Old School? Pure Trance? House? Well then you’ve come to the right place. Oh, and the station collaborates with Party107.com and Gruvsonic, so as a bonus you get their Dance channels as well here. A Couple of gems are the Freestyle channel (probably the best place on the net to hear Freestyle music from its peak days), as well an an oldschool Miamimixx (Miami’s Retro Dance Channel).

ETN.FM http://etn.fm/ U.S.A.
Alongside D.I. FM this is the online station with the most stellar weekly resident DJ lineup. A lot of the new records being spun in the sets of some of the scene’s finest can be heard right here. Be sure to check out all the articles and DJ interviews under the Articles section. There’s so many good shows to mention but a couple that I’d like to point out are Kenneth Thomas with his show Obsessions which airs Tuesdays on the Progressive Channel, and Aly & Fila’s show Spiritual Moment on Fridays over on the Trance Channel.

Energy 981 http://www.energy981.com/ U.S.A.
One of the most famous online Mainstream Dance hits channel based in the U.S. The station was launched after Energy 92.5 & 7 left the airwaves in Chicago, so the spirit of that station lives on here. There’s live Djs, great liners, and the music mix is balanced between Currents and Recurrents (ie older records). There’s a second channel which focuses on...Classic Rock! Oh, and Energy is now associated with 202 Online so you get a plethora of stations from them, which includes another Dance station called Techno Club, and everything from Top 40 stations, to Country, to the new Rhythmic A/C format.

Puls Radio http://www.pulsradio.com France
Mainstream Dance station based in France, but focusing on the big crossover anthems in Germany and all of Central Europe. That means the German Club charts are a strong reference guide: http://www.deutsche-dj-playlist.de/gkddp/?GKR=top100&GKEB=2
This is also where Euro acts like Cascada, DHT, and DJ Sammy might break out of on the net. So, if you want to hear Euro-Dance, Euro-Trance, Trance anthems, House anthems, and basically mainstream Dance in general this is one of your best options. You’ll love the audio processing - it’s excellent.

Techno FM http://techno.fm/ Canada
Montreal is in the house and representing to the fullest. Lots of cool stations to listen to here including one with live mixes, a real Techno channel, as well as ones catering to fans of Psy, House, Prog, Trance, and D N' B.

Ravenet Radio http://www.ravenet-radio.de/ Germany
Did someone say RAVE? :) Yes, the oldschool spirit of PLUR, or peace, love, unity, respect lives on. Ravers unite for a net station that plays some great mixes of House, Hard Dance, and Trance. Most of the young DJs at this station love to spin at least some Hard Dance (whether it’s cheesy Hands Up, or underground Hard Techno) so expect the energy level to be on overdrive most times .

Proton Radio http://protonradio.com/ U.S.A.
The leading webstation for the global Progressive camp. Luke Chable, Sander Kleinenberg, Anthony Pappa, D:Fuse, Chris Fortier, Shiloh, Oliver Lieb, Jody Wisternoff, Kosmas Epsilon, and loads more good Djs can all be heard hosting and mixing it up.
Some of the best shows to look out for include Balance Record Pool Presents, DJ Magazine Presents Soundlab, and The Download hosted by Beatport

Moo Dance http://www.moodance.com U.S.A.
There are some hillarious liners here, which bode well with the name of the station. It’s nice to see a station that knows how to sound both silly and professional at the same time. There’s even a “serving the universe” jingle of the type made famous on Z-100 New York.
You’re also in for quite a treat with the station’s super high quality streams. There’s a 128 K AAC stream! You can’t top that. Oh yeah, the music’s not bad either ;)

Radio Seven http://www.radioseven.se/ Sweden
Mainstream Dance from the land that brought you Abba and Ace of Base. The station is considered old by net-radio standards as it’s been around since 1999. The focus is largely on Euro-Dance, though there’s some crossover Trance and House too. Nice audio processing.

Bassline http://www.bassline.gr/ Greece
From that intro on the Progressive/Psychedelic Trance channel you know you’re about to be exposed to some of the sickest Psy/Goa music around. The 32 K AAC stream ensures that your experience will be a pleasurable one. When you need to cool it down, simply flip it over to the Chillout Channel.

BassDrive http://www.bassdrive.com/ U.S.A.
For all of your Drum N bass needs you might as well go here. BassDrive is also a record label that promotes America’s DNB scene, and with the Track History right there in front of you on the homepage you know exactly what it is that you’re hearing.

I-Breaks http://www.ibreaks.co.uk/ U.K.
Quality Breakbeat music 24/7, and it’s associated with a Breaks record store.
The weekly shows are archived and can be heard by going to the Archives section of the Menu. Nice audio processing if you’re listening to the Broadband stream.

Cyberstacja http://cyberstacja.com/ Poland
Three Dance channels to choose from. Klub focuses on Euro-Dance, House anthems, crossover Trance, and is highly recommended. The second is a pure Trance channel, and there’s a separate House channel too.
The website promotes big Dance events in Poland, and helps in some way to unite and ignite the passionate Polish Club scene.

Radio ABF http://www.radioabf.net/ France
Sounds like a very professional operation on the main ABF channel, which focuses on the big House hits (and the occasional Hip Hop record) that are currently hitting France and much of Europe. The real gem though is ABF Underground, which plays some of the sickest Techno music on the planet. You’ll also hear some Tribal and Drum N Bass here.

Vonyc http://www.vonyc.com/radio/ Germany
Owned and associated with the number one ranked DJ in the world, a certain Paul Van Dyk, Vonyc is both a record store and a radio station. As expected, there’s plenty of Trance here from Paul’s record bag, but also some good House and Progressive records you might want to familiarize yourself with. The grapics are cool, and there’s good station promo-liners too. There’s also some nightly shows hosted by well known DJs like Steve Porter, John Askew, and of course PVD himself.

CBA FM http://www.cbafm.com/ Argentina
One of the premiere online Dance stations from Latin America. CBA FM airs some of the top weekly DJ shows including Robbie Rivera, Matt Darey, Ronald Van Gelderen, Chris Liebing, Markus Schulz, Ronski Speed, Ernesto vs. Bastian, Filo & Perry, and the list goes on. The only drawback is the stream is set at 64 K.

Radio DJ http://www.radiodj.ro Romania
Radio Deejay is a popular name in Europe, which originated in Italy. Nowadays you’ve got a bunch of FM and virtual stations that go by this name. The focus here is on European Dance hits, both in the clubs and on the charts. You’ve got some nice radio liners and to listen simply click on where it says Asculta.

Fear FM http://www.fearfm.nl Holland
Playing some HARD Dance, including a hot new sound breaking out of the Benelux called Jumpstyle. The station hosts parties, and even has a Top 40 chart of the hottest Hardstyle/Jumpstyle records.

BeatBoxRadio http://www.beatboxradio.com Canada
Broadcasting from one of the biggest club scenes in North America, not to mention one of the most open minded and forward thinking scenes musically, Montreal. What you’ll find here is Chill Out music all through the late night hours, and the best in Trance, Progressive, and House from sunrise till way past sunset.Oh yeah, and they webcast with a 256 K stream!

Pro FM http://www.pro-fm.net Holland
This is more of an Adult friendly Dance station, but at least there’s no overplayed/burnt out Disco music. 80s, 90s, and today is what this station is all about. What’s great is that this station goes deep on its 80s and 90s cuts, and doesn’t just play the most obvious hits of those decades. The jingles are also extremely professional.

Energy FM http://www.energyfm.co.uk U.K.
The biggest records in Clubland over in the UK are played here. That means the records that chart here http://www.dmcupdate.com/charts/ are the ultimate reference for this station.
It’s mostly nonstop great music you’ll hear, some professional liners too, and there are also some great mixshows on the weekend. You can find the tracklistings, and even download most of the mixes for free via the website. Nice audio processing is one of the perks. http://www.energyfm.co.uk/pages/mix-downloads-and-tracklists.php

GrooveRadio http://www.grooveradio.com U.S.A.
One of the most legendary online stations, and an offshoot of the now-defunt Groove 103.1 Los Angeles. The music is great, the show and interviews are awesome too. You always know what you’re hearing when you click on Listen Now!
The low quality of the stream is a whole other issue though...

Pure DJ http://www.puredj.com Holland
Yes! Another excellent station in the same vein as ETN and Digitally Imported. This station has an enormous, and excellent, DJ lineup. Andy Moor, Ronski Speed, Cor Fijneman, Leon Bolier, Joop, Galen Behr, and the famous Mellowmania show. Great audio processing as well. Since Holland is the capital of Big Room Trance, one of its main Club Charts is very Trance leaning, and you’re bound to hear the records charting on it via this station:http://www.idp.nl/online/charts/

Music One http://www.m1live.com/ U.S.A.
From New York City, a REAL Mainstream Dance station. This is what SHOULD be airing on the NYC airwaves right now!!!

Ministry of Sound Radio http://www.ministryofsound.com/radio UK
Don’t let the low quality stream fool you - this is one of the most popular Dance stations on the web complete with live on-air DJs, giveaways, club nights, and more.
Some of the biggest commercial Dance hits charting in the UK are played here, as well as great shows from Above & Beyond, John 00 Fleming, and Hed Kandi.Only downside is that if you want to hear the high quality stream you have to pay for it.

Deep Mix Moscow Radio http://www.deepmix.ru/ Russia
The best way to call this station is simply Underground Electronica.. Some cool Electro, Minimal, Techno, and fun and futuristic sounds is what you get if you check them out.

DFR Radio http://www.dfr.fm/ Czech Republic
Specialising in House music via great weekly shows by the likes of DJ Hot Hands, the popular House Pacific show, Defected In The House, and more. Even though the station is based out of the Czech Republic, some of its best shows are associated with the House scene in italy. I’ve listened to 5 shows in a row and they were all great! Good audio processing too.

XXL Radio http://www.xxl-radio.de/ Germany
This station is VERY heavy on Euro-Dance and 90s Dance. The station has live on air presenters, and even a phone number at the bottom of the website that you can call to annoy the DJ...that is if you can speak and understand German ;)

Destroyer http://www.destroyer.net/radio/ U.S.A.
Drum N Bass to the max with shows hosted by talented DJs from every corner of the U.S., as well as ones from Belgium, Germany, Canada, and the UK.

Fusion Radio Chicago http://fusionradiochicago.com/ U.S.A.
This station has come into its own in the last year, finding its own niche. It’s evolved from the typical sounding American Dance Hits channel to one that somewhat leans on Circuit anthems/Gay Dance without calling itself a Gay station. Pretty smart way to avoid alienating certain listeners, which certain net-only Gay Dance stations do. As expected, the music format includes plenty of remixes to Pop hits, and records currently charting on Billboard’s Club play chart http://billboard.com/bbcom/charts/chart_display.jsp?g=Singles&f=Hot+Dance+Club+Play
Professional liners and good audio processing also help make this station one of the net’s best.

HBR1 http://www.hbr1.com/ Germany
You don’t know what you’re missing! One of the best places online to go to for Psychedelic and Full-On Trance. That takes place on the main channel called IDM Tranceponder. There’s also a Progressive House and Electro channel called Tronic Lounge, and interestingly enough you’ll hear Psy influences on this channel as well, so it’s hardly your typical Progressive channel. Lastly, there’s Dream Factory, which plays some fantastastic Ambient music, and even here there’s Psy influences..

DBS http://www.dbsradio.net Germany/Holland
Playing big records from the the Club charts in Holland and Germany, as well as some fun guilty pleasure Euro-Dance records.

Global Beats http://www.globalbeats.fm/ Germany
Trance, Tech Trance, Techno, Schranz, Progressive, and more are all here. The station can be insightful as far as what the German and central European crowd is feeling these days. It also claims to steer clear of cover versions b/c “this kind of music damaged the reputation of techno, trance, house, and other styles during the last years”.
Having problems reading in German? Try the site in English http://international.globalbeats.fm/

Sensegenerate FM http://sensegenerate.fm/ U.S.A.
Very similar to the concept over at ETN. You can find shows by Trance DJs/producers such as CJ Stone, Agnelli & Nelson, Marc Van Linden, Darren Tate, Aly & Fila, and more.
There’s 2 channels here: The Mainstream Channel, which is the main Trance channel. You’ve got top notch 192 K streams for this channel. Then there’s the Diversity Channel which webcasts with an amazing 96 K AAC stream. The only problem is that you can barely make out on the homepage what track/show is playing on the Diversity Channel.

Maxxima http://www.maxxima.org France
Midtempo House music for the most part here, and to a certain degree a return to the roots of House music. There’s lots of different shades of House covered here. From the commercial side of it to Funky, Deep, Latin, Electro, Soulful, and even Disco. Music to the max...xima.

Italian Dance Network http://italiandancenetwork.com Italy
Nothing but current Italo and Euro-Dance from Italy. Yes, this music is still alive and kickin, and with the 56 K AAC stream, and good audio processing, you can even try to enjoy it. The music is still in demand especially in northern Italy, Spain, Austria, Romania, and Denmark.
Fun music to get drunk to and sing at a karaoke bar...

Jenny FM http://jenny.fm Germany
The name may be unusual, but forget that. The motto here is Lovely beats to **** off your mind. Okay, so the motto’s English translation could be polished up. Thankfully it’s Trance, House, and even some Techno, that run the show here.
There’s loads of webcast servers to choose from, so you’re never gonna lose the feed, whether you’re on dial-up or on cable. I’ve noticed there are some issues on occasion with the high quality 160 K streams, but overall the streams are solid.

Pulse Radio http://www.pulseradio.net Australia
Not to be confused with the Puls Radio out of France, this station’s focus is largely on Electro and Progressive, Underground House, and some Breaks.
Interesting to note that some of the shows originate in some of the cities and places where EDM broke out of, such as Ibiza and Manchester.

Liquid FM http://www.liquid.fm Norway
From Norway comes a station giving a lot of the new breed of Trance DJs a chance to host their shows. They don’t disappoint, and some of them will go far. A good example is the show Tactical Tuesday, which has included guest mixes from 4 Strings and Mac Zimms. There’s even a Reviews section where tracks and compilations are reviewed.

Techno4Ever http://www.techno4ever.net Germany
Focusing on crossover Hard Dance, especially on the Euro-leaning genre known as Hands Up, which goes down well in the mainstream clubs over in Germany and Austria.
The station lets its audience know where in Germany it can go out to hear some of the music played. This is done via the Events section. The Location section is great if you want to know about all of Germany’s leading clubs, and want to browse the websites of these night clubs. Even the legendary Tresor in Berlin, the most famous Techno club in the world, is mentioned.
