Rewound Radio WOR FM Top 300 1969/soundprocessing

It's terrible. Sounds like a DBX Over-Queasy. Add that to the talent and it's just unlistenable.

Just flipped it on for a bit. I am *not* a big fan of "The Dentist". I'm one of the many people he has "excommunicated" from the NYRMB over the years. He's one of the more obnoxious, "I'm never wrong" know-it-alls I've ever encountered on the internet (quite a feat, when you think about it!). And yet, he's obviously having fun with this, which is clearly the idea, limited as his on-air skills are -- and I'm actually knda surprised *how* limited, given his superior attitude on the NYRMB. But for what it is, and the audience it's aimed at, it's not THAT bad.

As Jerry would say, I have become an "Anti-Dentite" myself. I couldn't even listen to it as it appears to me in Windows Media - I guess radio people aren't suppose to use Unix!

During a gripe-fest when a bunch of us decided to leave his board somebody came up with this rant of his, which may explain quite a bit.

It's too bad as I wanted to hear just what it sounds like, especially since I came across a couple of guys who are reviving the now-defunct WMEX oldies format online.

It sounds very singleband limiter/compressor-like indeed. It's by far a fat and optimod sound. There are lots of plugins to create a more stable sound like Breakaway but maybe he's creating the sound of the old days with this singleband sound.

The single-band compression kind of works for what he's doing, but he needs to raise the threshold and/or gate it. During the stopdown in The Rascals' Good Lovin', the silence got sucked up so high it sounded like a big whoosh combined with ground hum modulated at 100%. I don't know of any radio station that would set their processing that way, even in the 60s. It's possible to set the threshold at a more reasonable level and still accomplish the kind of dense sound he's looking for. I'd be inclined say something on his board but I know I'd be ignored, especially since 100% of the commenters over there are telling him how great it is.

True, GBR has been in the Internet radio game more than Rewound Radio has - and the man behind GBR has more radio experience (and counting - he's the Johnny Donovan of KABC). But I enjoy both stations equally.

I would suggest Great Big Radio by Howard Hoffman. A far more professional presentation in every aspect.
GBR is a fantastic station. I had it on for about 10 hours yesterday and it never got tiring. And the liners are great ("we put our playlist in a blender... that was stupid, now we need a new playlist... and a new blender). 70s-based Oldies done right.

As an outcast from the dentist board (I didn't take kindly to having my posts edited with no indication or reason), I'm no fan of the proprietor, but my opinion of Rewound Radio is based on my radio preferences. WOR-FM's adoption of the straitjacketed Drake Top 40 format in place of New York's first fulltime progressive station has always been a sore point with me. It was a corporate mandate that was guaranteed to fail. It was only when OR-FM adopted a local approach and flipped to WXLO that it became a great station.

All that said, I like the countdown music mix, but the 'puker' delivery is like nails on a blackboard. There's nothing worse than listening to someone with nothing to say trying to talk up to the post. Dan Ingram made it sound easier than it was. I don't miss that kind of radio. I like the processing though - I think it's better than what the original OR-FM had (always sounded thin to me), and although there is far better processing today, Rewound's processing does a good job at capturing the 'big' sound. (Although nobody did 'big' processing better than Larry Berger's AOR WPLJ.)

Rewound Radio is a labor of love and it likely takes a lot of work to set up and maintain. Overall, it sounds pretty good. As for the unfortunate situation on the 'blackboard', while we can freely discuss subjects like Rewound here, it doesn't work in reverse over there. They could use an infusion of fresh blood over there to sweep the cobwebs off of some of the crusties who still long for the days when the FCC rules forced stations to carry news every hour, regardless of format. But they seem happy the way they are, and some of the old pros obviously feel comfortable there. A virtual radio old folks home.

For those of us still kickin', it's good to have an alternative.

Very well put..as another who was banished from that board, I couldn't agree more. However I would never listen to anything he puts on..especially with his awful voice on it. He has proven over the years he knows little about radio.

I'd love that same countdown with Larry Lujack, or Ron Lundy, or Harry Harrison talking up the songs. Sniffen is an embarrassment to radio.

I've read the NYRMB for 8 years now, and I can't believe that Sniffen has so many followers still. What a classless, intolerant, narrow-minded, and downright obnoxious person he is. Luckily, he's not the dentist who gives me root canals :)

I read the conversation about DJ Megatron's death on the NYRMB and have never been so disgusted as I am now. Check out the post by Ted David. Unreal. I thought that he was a respected radio veteran. In fact he is an ignorant, racist, mental midget.

So what was #1 anyway? Hey Jude? :)

Whew, that is pathetic. And that doddering fool moderates one of the boards. What a pair - they deserve each other.
