Kansas Reyes Media buying 105.9 KKSW in Lawrence

The station is either off the air or running very low power; I haven't seen any complaints about it, though, nor any documentation.

Another one of my friends said it was off yesterday evening, too. He said he didn’t notice the translator on 106.1 either. I suggested it might have to do with the pending ownership change, though I obviously don’t have any inside information.

The 105.9 signal issue was reported to the r/lawrence group on Reddit. A poster on there claimed to work at the station and indicated that the Reyes deal fell through and will not be consummated. They also claimed that they are doing transmitter work.

I did a quick aircheck on my commute home (4/25/25). At 4:05 p.m. in Downtown Topeka, I got no signal. Once I got to Lawrence at ~ 4:30 p.m., I picked up what sounded like dance club music, then a liner identifying the station as '105.9 KISS.'

KKSW does have an auxiliary transmitter with ERP of 8.4 kW/180 m south of Lawrence. (This was also the location of the main transmitter from 1979 until they moved to Lecompton in 1986). Downtown Topeka is near the edge of the 60 dBu contour of the Auxiliary facility as mapped out on fccdata.org and should have given me a listenable signal from there, so they may be on and off at this time.

A second extension request was filed today. The exhibit attached to the filing states “The parties are still finalizing certain details related to closing,”

I’ll trust official filings over anonymous Reddit posts. The sale of KKSW to Reyes is still anticipated until either 1) we hear Spanish on 105.9 2) Uncle Charlie is notified of the final disposition.

I'm sure it's a glitch, but I noticed the RDS display today labeled "Oldies" along with the requisite phone number for some injury lawyer.
This has been fixed! Ki
They’re now calling themselves “The new KISS FM” and have the upcoming KU football schedule on the website, but I haven’t noticed anything else different when I’ve listened.
The roll-out made a lot of difference, it's improved more and more within the last month. The all-new KISS FM has younger DJs and sounds sort of like a streaming service, with more songs in a row, fewer interruptions. The Music programming is tweaked differently, with more hottest hits. Thank you for starting this forum, @radiofan2023 !!

I can with 100% certainty say Kiss is not for sale. The FCC required the pending sale last year to be public for half a year or more...

That's not how it works. They simply have to file a notice of non-consummation once the deal is dead. Instead, a second extension was filed on May 20.

That filing said, "The parties respectfully request an additional 90-day extension of the consummation deadline. The parties are still finalizing certain details related to closing and require additional time to complete the transaction and file the consummation notice. All the pertinent information included in the application is still current."

That to me says the deal to Reyes isn't dead.

So, a filler format with low revenue until they finally unload the station, then.
Connoisseur did this in Des Moines several years ago albeit in a different set of circumstances. They took many years to build two underpowered rim shot signals in the market and probably during the process realized there was no chance to be competitive so when they got the stations fully built after being on special authority at very low power for years they launched a temporary CHR format that lasted about 7 months before they sold the two stations to Iowa Public Radio. They announced the intent to sell the stations literally like 60 days after they signed on.
