It's about time. The FCC should have done this a long time ago. RFB says that it will comply with FCC guidelines, but did the FCC not say to stop? Is RFB's continued broadcasting not a violation of FCC guidelines then? RFB needs to follow the same rules and procedures that "legal" broadcasters follow. I seem to recall that $$$ was one of the reasons RFB gave for not wanting to file with the FCC, not to mention the fact that it's probably run by a bunch of granola eating lefties from Brattleboro! There's a process for making a station "legal", why should RFB be allowed to ignore it? There's a right way to fight mass-consumption corporate radio, RFB's way is not the right way. I hope their lawyers are working pro-bono, because if you can't afford the costs involved with putting a legal radio station on the air, how can you possibly pay a lawyer? I'm no fan of the FCC, but it is what is. If you want to change it, write our reps in D.C.

I thought these lines were good...

>Rfb does not operate in defiance of government but rather from the belief of

Uh, operating at an illegal power with an unlicensed operation is pretty much a text book example of "operating in defiance"

>Radio free brattleboro has always stressed to the public and to the FCC that >it will adhere to FCC guidelines and will serve the public whether licensed or >not.

Starting when? You haven't so far...

I am glad to see the FCC take serious action on this. RFB sets a bad presence to LPFM/LPAM broadcasters who work hard to keep their broadcasts legal, while this renegade outfit just says the hell with it and continues to broadcast illegally.

Exactly. I remember a few years ago there was Radio Free Vermont
at 96.5 in Rutland with standards and even PSAs and ads (like one
for a golf driving range in Clarendon). Sounded legit, but "Your
Hometown Radio Station" was not. Gotta play by the rules/laws, folks.

FYI:

Two links to newspaper accounts of the latest chapter in the on-going saga of radio free brattleboro are posted on the "Community Radio" page of Radio-Info.

I agree. Shameful the Commission let it drag on so long. All the $$ RFB spent on this whole mess would've bought a lot of airtime on a licensed station. I have little doubt at least 1 station would've let them buy, say, all day Sunday to do their thing. It would've given them chance to sell spots and get a much larger coverage area, too. But if there was even a sliver of common sense over at RFB, they wouldn't have defied the FCC or used those left-field legal arguments to justify their illegal station.
