Rhandi Rhodes mugged?!

I'm reading a swirl of rumors about something of an annoucement on the John Elliot Show that Rhandi Rhodes was mugged and missing lots of teeth! Infact she wasn't on her show today. While I don't like Rhandi because of her obnoxious attitude towards callers if these rumors are true then I hope she is okay...

It is a sad thing if Randi Rhodes would be the victim of crime.

Of course, I could be really totally tasteless if I would quote the old adage, "A conservative is a liberal who has been mugged." ;D ::)

Also, apparently on Friday, Thom Hartmann was informed by his mechanic of bullet holes in his car, while a month ago someone fired into the window of Houston's Pacifica station, narrowly missing a DJ. The same station was bombed twice in the '70s, including at least once by the KKK. Of ocurse, it hasn't been proven in any of these recent cases that it was political violence, but it's disturbing to see political talk show hosts shot at and hospitalized. Anyone know of other similar incidents recently, including conservative targets?

By the way, the link I provided above says Randi was badly beaten -- she lost several teeth and will be out at least the rest of the week. She wasn't carrying a purse or bag, no jewelry, and it wasn't a sexual attack, which of course is leading some to wonder if she was targeted personally.

I'm in New Jersey...listening on the net to progressive talk WINZ in Miami...where Nicole Sandler has been doing a good job of handling this story with the help of a producer, who has been making calls to New York in an attempt to secure some verifiable information. The producer came on the air briefly to say that she had talked with a New York cop who apparently told her that no police report had been filed--thus the New York cops have no further information.

Whatever the motive or lack of one, this is a scary and disturbing incident.

My best to Randi--the rockin' Queen Mother of progressive talk.

Jim

I am afraid that incidents such as this are the result of the national talker's "Us vs Them" attitudes.

Its neither conservative or liberal.

Sadly, Talk Radio, as it has evolved, has become a threat to democracy as has contributed significantly to our do-nothing Congress.

Brian, it's not clear if this is politically motivated, but she did not have it coming to her no matter what her "attitudes" may be.

Also, per another forum, AAR host Jon Elliot says she had two assailants and is in a lot of pain (obviously). And apparently she talks on the show about how she lives on Park Avenue near 39th. That may not be a smart thing to talk about on the air.

True. It may not be politically motivated. Lets hope not.

I can see how the hateful trends in Talk Radio could lead its wacko elements in this direction though.

As I see it, it would be the end result of any of the particular shows complete denial of the 'opposing half' of the political spectrum.

We don't need the Fairness Doctrine reinstated, we just need to start respecting the opinions of our fellow Americans and quit denigrating and insulting them. This current 'party first' BS should end asap.

I find it interesting (and disgusting) that the initial reaction to this regrettable incident is that the assailant just must be a right winger of some sort. Huh?

It's New York, people! At night! A woman walking alone at night in New York was mugged! Sadly, this happens a lot and in big cities from coast to coast. Odds are excellent that this was just some random nutcase who needs to be taken off the streets - immediately.

Let's get out of this habit of seeing everything through a veil of politics. And, I abhor Jon Elliot's comments that are serving only to generate unnecessary anger and hatred. What a clown! He has no proof that the attack was politically motivated, but has gotten his previously unknown name in the trades with these comments. This guy is absolutely irresponsible for using this incident as an excuse to toss verbal bombs out there. And, I am sure that there is a percentage of his listeners who are dumb enough to buy it.

Look, no offense, but I don't see that Rhandi Rhodes has enough public notoriety to render her a target anyhow. She is well regarded in the AAR community, but relatively unknown to the general public. And there are plenty of other major league leftists who would make much better "targets" for an angry "right winger." To my knowledge, all are still sipping their lattes in relative safety.

You know, bad things can and do happen to good people. Randomly.

I wish Ms. Rhodes all the best in her recovery and let's all be thankful that this wasn't worse.

As soon as I read the news, my first thought was: I wonder how long it will take before someone speculates that this was done by "a right-winger". The answer is that it took less than the time it took me to read the article.

"Pointing out that Rhodes was wearing a jogging suit and displayed no purse or jewelry, (late night host Jon Elliott) speculated that "this does not appear to me to be a standard grab the money and run mugging."

"Is this an attempt by the right wing hate machine to silence one of our own," he asked. "Are we threatening them. Are they afraid that we're winning. Are they trying to silence intimidate us."

Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy?

I wondered how long it would take for a NYC mugging to become a "right-wing plot". ::)

BRNout posted while I was responding, and his post is so on-target that I don't have anything else to say.

She is such an insignificant figure that 99.9% of the public - left or right - has never heard of her, let alone consider her a voice that needs to be silenced. Just having a show on AAR pretty already guarantees that your voice will not be heard.

And if this incident is eventually found out to be 'politically' motivated I am sure apologies will be forthcoming.

If Rush would have been mugged I would have thought the same thing.

So Elliot took to the airwaves to "ask the question" as to whether or not the attack on Miss Rhodes was politically motivated? An "attempt to silence one of their own"? Good Lord, people - "one of their own" has just endured a brutal attack. And they care less about her well being than they do about spectacularly under-informed conspiracy theories? With friends like these....

Well put. Why does everything always have to be about them?

Very good post.

And if it's found that it was NOT politically motivated, I'm sure those theorizing a right-wing hit will apologize.

"Air America radio host Randi Rhodes is temporarily off the air, but claims she was brutally attacked near her Manhattan apartment are bogus, her lawyer and a police source said today."
