RHV - A Labor Of Love

Thank you, folks! Correction to The Drummer; it's our 33rd anny, the start of our 34th year. I saw a photo of myself in the RHV scrapbook. Dang, but I looked a lot younger back then. Shows you what loose nuns and bad altar wine will do to a guy after a while.

Isn't That Why Bishop Martino Has Been Against The Nuns Fasting?

Because He didn't Want Them To Develop Loose Habits?

( Sorry .. That's A Very Old Joke.)

Congratulations Father Tom. Love and respected your work all these years.

And a bad one. Wash your mouth out with altar wine. Or something more effective, and pass the bottle around.

It's on MiniDisc now. We're always about one generation behind the rest of the industry. Mini works well for us at the moment.

(Darn, I hate it when my reply gets bumped to the top of another page.)

Here I am! Over here!

(Waves arms frantically.)

Used to run a 60 second spot at the half hour break. Had to flip the reel to reel tape, then cue it up. The Phillies in the 80s had as an outfielder Gary Matthews. He is a broadcaster now for them. When the ball was hit to "The Sarge", his catching it was an adventure. He got it done but not before a few gasps and furrowed brows of concern. That kind of sums up the way I did the breaks on the RHV. But Father Thom used to say, "what counted was what came out of the speaker". But Oh Lord, if there was video back then.......

We still don't allow streaming video of the RHV being recorded. We don't want to scandalize the children or stampede the cattle. Just cuz it sounds calm and easygoing doesn't mean I have all the pre-recorded inserts really cued up as I intro them. You people in broadcasting know how that works: you just talk a wee bit longer about the "Moment in Time," or the "Prime Time Focus." Spin to the right cut, lock it up (come on, come on) and hit "play."

They'll never know.

Ah - yes cueing RHV...the tape screaming across those Revox heads at fast forward, then at rewind 'till you got to the front, sometimes having to push play and pray you get it right (twice!) as the second hand keeps clicking away. Are those machines still in service or in a museum soewhere? Believe it or not the RHV was a Godsend during the Marathon's.

Flipping the tapes on the old Revoxes ... When I started doing it, I barely made it before the cart was done. (Wasn't it the UNITY "Word for the Day" for quite a while?) Then Tom showed me the trick to it, and learned that it actually took about :15 to make the flip, leaving you :45 to relax.

(Oh the marathons! What a reminder, Twig. Is there a general WRKC thread around this place? Time to hit the search!)

When we went to cassettes, me and the late Sherwood Baker used to have a contest to see who could flip the tape faster, with no cart inbetween. I think he could go from outcue to intro in :03 and I could do it in :025.
