Rhythmic AC in Philly: Is it a possibility?

M

Guest
Will Rhythmic AC surface on any of the Philly FM's? If it would, I think it would fill a niche in the market. As we all know, this market is oversaturated with hip-hop/r&b stations. Instead of Wired 96.5, The Beat, and Power 99 all competing for the same audience, why not fill a niche in the market with a format such as Rhythmic AC? Has there been any market research to see if it would be a viable format in the City of Brotherly Love? Perhaps using a slogan such as "upbeat favorites" would be suitable for a rhythmic AC instead of billing themselves as some type of "dance" station. A perfect example is 104.3 KBIG in Los Angeles, CA, which uses the "upbeat favorites" slogan. I remember back in 2003 when Mix 95.7 toyed with a rhythmic-leaning AC format and were completely rhythmic at night with Boogie Nights. I just wanted to get some thoughts on this format.

Of course....why not blow up one of the rock stations, since there are way too many of them. Sure, we need another station that plays what I like and the Hell with everyone else.

FACT: Star tried it in the 90's....and FAILED!
FACT: Boogie Nights on 95.7 was a miserable FAILURE!!

Wanna try again?
______________

Will you stop boohoo'ing the lack of rock stations? With the play what I want the hell with everyone else attitude .. isnt that what you're asking for. If all these urban stations are striving and making coin there is obviously room for them. You're basically saying play what I BOBALTIMARI want and the hell with everyone else... slightly ironic.

Get a cd, get XM ( I love mine great rock stations on it Deep Tracks has some really good cuts) but seriously just get over it, the great rock cycle will come again and then you'll hear the fans of Urban wondering what happened to their music. Until then enjoy SPorts Talk WYSP ;)

How about WPEN. Even WAMS would be a great source for it.

That is a fantastic idea, which station would you want to flip to Rhythmic AC, there are many one-sided lean formats to choose from: 96.5/98.1/98.9/100.3/102.1/103.9/105.3/106.1 and 107.9, you are correct again, all these repititious stations are too much to tolerate. While we are on it, which one would you also want to flip to music intense Active and one more to Alternative, formats this city underserves, this would eliminate 3 of these 9 formats. I know you were not talking about one of the few and inbetween rock stations you wanted to flip to Rhythmic AC, that would be a real crime.

"How Many Shades Of Black Are There"?

Sarcasm Alert:

Rap? Hiphop? Smooth Jazz? Churban? Souldies? Now..."Rhythmic AC"? With all due respect, will you not be pleased until EVERY station in town has some kind of whumppa-thumppa beat?

I can hear it now:

"KYWhat's Happenin'...News With An Urban Edge!", "SHADY...AC For The 'Hood!", "WYSPunk'd...All Blackeyed-Peas/All-The-Time!", "WIPissed-Off...T.O. IS Being Ripped Off By The Man!" and "UncleBEN...You Got A Problem With Us Playin' Our Stuff, Paleface"?

End Sarcasm Alert:

Seriously...if you manufacture twenty permutations of the same or markedly similar formatics, you risk splintering the available demos into twenty teeny ratings outlets.

Just my humble opinion...

Nice try with the reverse psychology. Let's see....crying over no dance stations is OK....but my complaining about not many rock choices is not? That, my freind, is the irony.

You obviously have access to numbers which us laypeople don't, care to share this infinite wisdom? Oh that's right....anything that shows rock in a positive light is verboten! More irony from you.

We'll get over the disapperance of rock when you kiddies stop whining about a lack of a friggen dance station.

To each their own. I find ESPN too stuffy for me. I enjoy FSR, especially Steve Czaban and JT the Brick. And no, its not because there's "FOX" in the title.
______________

FIGURES

After reading your posts over the years, I would not expect anything different from your bias mind.

FIGURES

That goes for you too: With the distored forms of rock that the other poster mentioned, how many are on the air in the Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and DC markets. I think its safe to say maybe one or two, but all the forms of urban that were mentioned are on all the markets in triplicate. Talk about urban saturation.

If you seriously put Soft Rock into the same category as Hard Rock, you need a refresher course in Kal Rudman 101 and need to be spanked with a Nano iPod. .

I knew at least one smart*ss would respond like this; thanks for not disappointing. :)

Re: REALITY//Rhythmic AC in Philly

I haven't yet read any of the responses in this thread and I almost dread it due to the hard-headed "eccentricity" of so many in our community. LOL.

I just want to say that I believe you've hit a couple nails right on their heads. (1.) The research for this particular format probably hasn't been done. (2.) But more importantly, your idea that a Rhythmic here would have to be an Adult Contemporary format is exactly right-on. A full-blown dance station probably wouldn't stand much of a chance here. But a rhythmic-leaning AC has a real shot at cleaning up. (Not 12+ of course and not with the Rock fans, but with the very desirable female demo around 18-49, maybe up to age 54.)

The irony is that, for the past ten years, everyone's been trying and failing to reach the exact demo. They've all been playing a variation of something called "Modern AC," for which the target audience clearly couldn't care less.

Reality: One of those "Modern AC" formats seemed to only get a decent audience share when they ran a Rhythmic AC specialty show. It ain't rocket science, people!

This coming from someone who posted the following: "Rap? Hiphop? Smooth Jazz? Churban? Souldies? Now..."Rhythmic AC"? "
If you think Rhythmic AC is like a Smooth Jazz or a Hip Hop station, or better yet if you think Smooth Jazz and Hip Hop are the same, then you need to get your ears checked.

Fellows lets face facts. The only reason why we have some many hip hop stations in this market, is one reason and one reason only. The PD's in this market are afraid to take chances period. Why is that KTU has managed to be on the air for like 15years in the #1 market in the country? They don't care what others think, they keep on banging great music, now they play a little bit of hip hop just enough to draw attention to there station without going over board and that is what Q102 use to do. You can't tell me we don't have the market for it, our gay population is big and our Latino is also large as well. So let me know when the market that created dance music in the 70's 80's suddenly became candy ass_es. We were trend setters in those decades and the city of Philadelphia has allowed the rap industries to take over and it makes me sick. I've about had it with 50cent and the game and Black eyed peas, please someone throw me a life jacket, better yet throw one over William Penn cause I think the city is going down again. Also, when you expose the population with only one type of music is it any wonder that every club you go into plays the same crap, no wonder the night life sucks in this city and the surrounding areas. It's clear to me that the reason these small little Pubs are taking over is because people are sick and tired of the same bullcrap, they would rather pump dollars in a jukebox and full the pockets of bar owners, and play monthly fees to satellite radio. Wake up phila rap ain't the only game in town, please fill our childrens heads with music instead making them look up to gangster, If I see one more white kid with hat turn sideway and acting like fitty cent I'm going to throw up.
