Rhythmic AC (in the Midlands?)

I think there are 2 possible candidates for Rhythmic AC in the Columbia, SC market. These 2 stations don't exactly have full market signals, but close enough. WZMJ 93.1-ESPN sports. I think it would compliment Inner City's other formats (Urban, Urban AC) to have a Rhythmic AC attached. They could play a lot of the stuff DM and Hot do not play. And, WIGL 93.9, well to put it honestly, this is a station no one cares about. Why not do what Miller does best, and put some rhythm into this station? I always thought Miller did it best when they had the Top 40 format in Sumter as Mix 94.7 and now Power 99.3 in that area does a good job. Rhythmic AC seems to me one of those fun formats that remind me of radio back in the day with a lot of energy and fun music, the way radio should sound. Sadly, most of the current contemporary rhythm stations now consist of bling bling/thug rap. That style is ok and all, but there is just too much of it and not enough positive/party jams. It looks like more and more R AC's are popping up everywhere. Raleigh, NC has Kiss 93.9 which debuted right after New Years. Thoughts?

If it happens Neil I could see it being either a rim shotter IE 93.9 or 94.7... The other long shot would be Double O, but as long as they are doing what they are doing and that is keeping COS down then they will stick with country... I can't see citidel doing it because it would hurt the cash cow B and Kiss and CC won't do it because they seem to be doing pretty good with their cluster plus it would hurt NOK which still strattles the fence... The best one I have heard so far is not even a movin' station, but it is 939 Kiss FM up in the RDU being ran by former Energy Chicago PD Chris Shebel... The music is right on track and when I do listen to it a lot of the music they play reminds me of the old Kiss 102 in Charlotte... CC1

I agree. It would be a fun format. As you all noted, no one but Double O has a full-market stick to make a go of it. The wild card is if Double O could keep digging at WCOS with just one stick and branch out with the other.

I've been told that WZMJ more than breaks even with ESPN because the operational costs are so low.

Double O mentioned 93.9 as a possibility. I second that. I haven't checked out how strong their signal is in the NE part of town though.

That's always been the problem for WIGL. As a Class A rimshot, even downtown, the multipath makes it really dicey... and that's with a very good European radio in the car.

I don't know what the ICBC folks did to WZMJ, but you can be in Camden and the like and get it really loud and clear.

Hey Steve How long ago has that been??? When me and my wife were visiting my parents back in june I was getting ZMJ kinda good, but was getting what was oldies 93 out of GSO... Even If ICBC tried RAC on ZMJ I don't think they would because it would pull from DM and HOT, but then again look at what CCU did in RDU with Kissso anything is possible... CC1

It's a been maybe 18 months or so (maybe a bit longer) when they upgraded the WZMJ transmission facility. They still run stereo on ESPN and its a pretty darned good signal for a rimshot. It' suprisingly solid downtown and out to the Northeast.

I wouldn't count on them changing formats on the thing for one reason: it makes money. ESPN affiliation is cheap, the network quality is good, and sports is an easy conceptual sell. Despite the fact that sports programming is slathered over at least 3 other stations: WCOS AM (Fox Sports) and WOMG & WTCB (Gamecocks).

Music formats haven't done well on the signal, so I doubt you'll see one soon. If they felt that they needed another urban-like format, WMFX or WARQ would be the one to flip.

More likely WARQ due to the demographic issues. Back in 1991-1992, one of the discussions internally at Clayton Radio was what format to go with after the decision was made to put WAAS out of its misery. It was either going to be harder/younger rock (which we did do) or CHuRban (rhytmic CHR). CHURBAN was a string contender because the 93.5 facility is downtown and much closer to the large demographic pockets that CHURBAN would appeal to. Ultimately, rock was chosen because all the players at Clayton knew rock radio and had successfully programmed KKBB Bakersfield (B-Rock 97.7) a classic-leaning rock station and would not have to hire anyone new. Hence We Are RoQ was born. Kiss 93.5 along with Power 93.5 were the top potential names for the stillborn CHURBAN.

WOW Interesting history... Power 93.5 nice ring :). I remember when you guys switched and I heard AC DC For Those About To Rock... I knew that Columbia radio was in for a complete change... Was Fayne doing the CE at that time... I remember when you guys launched the audio was not the greatest then one night I heard the nice 60 cycle hum and about two or three hours later you guys had one of the best sounding stations in Columbia at that time... BTW kinda OT here, but I have a new PC and every time I try to listen to XRY it keeps directing me to Yahoo Music... I can't load window or Real Player to listen to you guys and oddly enough XRY is the only station I am having problems with... CC1

Sounds like somethings slightly misconfigured.

Here's two direct URL's that you can use.

Whatever player you are using, have it open one of these URL's:

http://www.wxryfm.org:8000

http://68.16.194.127:8090

If you use the second one, it is an AAC feed of the air signal. So you'll know pretty quick if we go off the air. Advantage is that you will hear the O3t and supersecret sauce at work.

PS We are saving for an Ariane.
