Rhythmic in Monterey

Listening to KDON I realized they are a very "safe" Rhythmic playing just the hits and that's about it. No GREAT promotions. They play an occassional Latin Hip Hop or Reggaeton record. Is there any room for another Rhythmic in the market if done right? I know there used to be En Fuego as a Spanish Hip Hop - but true Rhythmic, or even Hurban with English delivery???

It just seems like Monterey lacks "flava" on the airwaves... and since Hip Hop is one of the top selling types of music, you'd think in a high-minority populous like Monterey there would be more...

102.5 has one of the two big FM signals in the Monterey Bay. The other is KWAV 96.9. Both stations do very well because the have the big signals. KDON has been very consistant at being nearly at the top of the pile for many years. Programming is a big part of that, but I thought it was put very well by a first-year college student a couple of years ago: "It's a big station, and I like being a part of something big".

As for "flava": The programming choices on the dial are pretty deep for such a small market. With 5 non-commercial stations, around 20 commercial stations, and just about evey format (including 24/7 classical), there is a little of everything.

Heck, we even have KPIG.

Interesting. By "flava" I was meaning more music targeting minorities. I'm looking at Monterey County's website now for minority population and demo figures but can't find any on their website.

I just wonder if a Rhythmic that strongly targets Latinos (con Reggaeton) would make a big enough dent to matter. I don't think En Fuego did it right... They had 100% Spanish delivery, and I don't think they played Reggaeton...

I mention "David Eduardo around?" because I know David has quite a bit of experience in this area and I respect his opinion as well...

Anyone else wanna chime in?
 
Monterey-Salinas-Santa Cruz used to have three CHR-Rhythmic stations, but two of them changed formats because they were way behind KDON.
 
En Fuego was in English... they played mostly Hip/Hop & R&B (same as KDON) but with much more Latin Hip-Hop (ie. Lil Rob, NB Ridaz, Gemini)... The signal SUCKED and the company had no money to invest in it (1017 KBTU had the same problems) . As for everyone praising Reggaeton as the new 'official' 2nd and 3rd generation latino soundtrack... I doubt that. I know quite afew 20-30 year old hispanics that can't stand it. Most of them would rather hear 50 cent. I think KDON is right on, and they play the reggaeton songs that crossover (ie: Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, NORE)... bravo! Earlier I read someone asking why there's not a station in Monterey that targets hispanics... KDON is it! They do an excellent job of catering to an 18-24 hispanic female... she loves KDON! I highly doubt anyone on the central coast will try and take them on again anytime soon.

yeah there was 101.7 as btu and the bomb and it did really good, they moved it into the more low 93.5 and 93.7 and then they folded it, they didint really give it a chance<P ID="signature">______________
