Rhythmic Oldies In Seattle/Tacoma

Look to be visiting soon and noticed there is not much for Funk or Old School R&B on the dials here.....

Being from Denver and have been in San Diego and Fresno....i noticed they have some R&B Oldies Stations (KMGV/XHRM)

Any Good Live Bands in this area that place this music....???

Listening to 93.3 and 92.5 on-line and they are mostly Pop and don't have much of an extensive playlist..........

There is a couple, but they are on the am side and you will not hear them north of Denny Way.
1420 KRIZ 1000 day 10 watts night 1620 KZIZ 10,000watts day 500 night and 1560 KZZZ?, Pacific, I think it signs off at sunset. When they reduce power nothing gets in Seattle and barely at full pwr.
Oh and city of license Renton 1420 1620, so if you're anywhere near S.E. Carr Rd, loud and clear.

These stations are also satellite fed most of the time, Blues, Soul, Gospel
Do a Google search I pretty sure they're online also....ztwins dot com???

If you have a decent radio & conditions are right, KBMS Vancouver WA 1480 AM also has the same format as KRIZ -- it sometimes pounds into the Seattle area at night.

PS -- KRIZ 1420 is 500 W nights, KYIZ 1620 is 1KW nights.

Last I checked, KRIZ (1420) is rhythmic oldies/blues. KYIZ (1620) is current R&B/Hip-Hop. KZIZ (1560) is Gospel.

oooops! The stuff I should really know about is the Ztwins.

Total fail...lol......Wiki maybe wrong on the stats, I'll ask and post later if so.
My memory isn't worth a damm thing!

My apologies, 1420 KRIZ Renton 1560 KZIZ, Pacific and 1620 KYIZ Renton and 1480 KBMS Portland.

There are some clubs that play "hip hop", but classic R&B soul has little attraction around here according to some.
You may see a classic R&B band or group playing at The Muckleshoot or Emerald Queen casinos or
maybe EWF playing at some wine tasting gig in Woodinville or some park over there.
Also there are a few very few clubs that play music of that type and the clubs are usually a hole in the wall club that aint date material. Rose Pedal & The Annex come to mind. One good place in particular was the Holiday Inn at Seatac that played the classics and new also.
Nice place well lit and actually served good drinks, and best of all no thugs, but those days are gone.

Become a member of Royal Esquire Club located in Columbia City@ Rainier & Edmunds st.?
Been at same location going on 40 years, I remember it when I was a kid.
Most of the members there have kids in college or have grand-kids...lol..good music food and drinks!! If you go you must try the "Soul Train" line...Hilarious!!

Here's something that might make you say hmmm, I was told that
1620 KZIZ tried to get the translator on 92.9 White Center/DesMoines but KPLU got it.
Really a sore spot, they will not talk about it much, and a little anger when you ask about it.
Northwest Rock an Roll Preservation Society must have got big money for it 'cause they are against big corporate radio from what I hear. "NPR"
Is 'KPLU' big corporate radio?

One other thing
If and when you come to Seattle and it's 40 degrees and raining, you must wear a coat, short pants and flip flop's/sandals with or without socks and have a dog or you wont fit in.. :D

Just a correction....the 92.9 translator was never owned by PLU. It's been in Rock n Roll Society's hands from it's inception. It was originally built at the Capitol Hill location on Madison, and then later moved to McMicken Heights on the East side of SeaTac airport, serving Des Moines, WA. They received some heat from KISM in Bellingham and that prompted the move towards the South. They rebroadcast the KGHO signal on this channel. The sound quality is quite poor but I enjoy listening because it is much more consistant oldies than either KJR or KMCQ.

As for the lack of Rhythmic Oldies in Seattle, that has been tried throughout the years but nothing ever stuck. Smooth Jazz was a less intimidating format incorporating some Soul and R & B but failed too in this town, blaming the lack of success on Arbitron's PPM model. I disagree. KWJZ beat the Smooth Jazz format into the ground like a dead horse---with no change in DJ's nor music. Just Kenny G and Sade forever. Had there been wholesale changes at Sandusky the Smooth Jazz format could have survived, I'll go to my grave with that. It's a shame that there isn't a good outlet (except for a 1000 watt AM) for this kind of music and I think there is a real business opportunity here for a Class C FM to try once again, though I am sure others might disagree. However I have data that would suggest some sort of adult rhythmic format could work in this town.

That was what I was told..As you and can see/hear KPLU is not on 92.9 but on 92.1 which I believe is owned/ by Seattle Streaming Radio.

Now I've asked Mr. Barrow again and he insist that KPLU has 92.9. Never said KPLU "owned it".
I was just mentioning that 1620 kziz wanted to be there but was refused by NWRRPS as to what I mentioned... Better statement maybe, it was "promised"? to KPLU.
Anyways he's pretty tight lipped about it he just looks and smiles at you says 'I don't know".

One thing I know about this company, they are open and eager to show you around answer just about any questions you have, and they'll give you some air time to sharpen your skills if you ask politely. Also it's not the sterile studios you see in the big operations, turntables, cart machines, albums,cd's and posters are everywhere I even saw some 45's. And yes they do have a computer automation too.

FMsteve Thanks! Most appreciated.

p.s FMsteve why don't you give that data to someone like uh KMTT?

There are two 92.1 translators in play here. The first in Tacoma and is owned by Seattle Streaming Radio. They carry ESPN Desportes from their Lakewood AM.

The second belongs to KPLU for West Seattle. It was made necessary when KWAO moved to Capitol Peak on 88.1 and blew KPLU off their old translator channel.

The problem was that a noted Seattle engineering consulting company, who knows better, specified a wide pattern directional antenna for 92.1 that blew up coverage for the Seattle Streaming 92.1 translator throughout the north and west-facing hills of Tacoma. KPLU quickly replaced the antenna with a tighter one that eliminated the Tacoma interference.

Kudos to the KPLU engineers, flaming bags of dog poop to the unnamed Seattle engineering consultant.

As for the 92.9 Northwest Rock and Roll translator, I'm sure they've been approached about it. There are a couple of AM stations who would love to have that FM spot, even at 250 Watts.
