RI CC Progressive Talker Seeks New Host

Clear Channel's WHJJ, the progressive talk station in Providence, RI, has an ad on All Access for a local talk show host. The ad does not mention this is (currently) a progressive talk station. The station carries an interesting combination of local programs, programs from Air America Radio and Imus:
530a-1000 Imus (Westwood One)
1000-1200 Springer (AAR)
1200-300p Franken (AAR)
300p-600p Arlene Violet (Local)
600p-800p Randi Rhodes (AAR)
800p-1000 Geoff Charles (Local)
1000-100a Mike Malloy (AAR)

Arlene Violet is a former RI Attorney General, who is on the Talkers Magazine Heavy 100 List. The ad does not say whether they are looking to go local in an additional daypart or replace a current local host. WHJJ has seen a dramatic drop in their 12+ AQH share since the 04 summer book.

As sometimes happens, the ad leaves out a contact name, as well as email and snail mail addresses for you to send your stuff if you're interested. I'm trying to imagine what part of talk show host requires lifting 40 pounds; maybe they expect you to take a lot of stuff home to study. And reel to reel tape recorders? How quaint!

_______________

Lots of Potential Part Time Talent

Lots of local part time talent that could go full time. Any thoughts??? Have no idea of the current part time contractual obligations. Please add more hosts and any comments, positive or negative:

1 - Charles Jaco (not sure if on the air right now or not)

2 - Jay Diamond (WKRO Boston)

3 - Peter Werbe (Detroit)

4 - Mark Levine (Talk Star radio networks)

4 - Turi Ryder (KIRO Seattle/Tacoma)

5 - Karel (KGO San Francisco)

Yep, Karel's going to move from KGO in San Francisco, to Providence, RI.

Sure he is.

Yep.

Re: Lots of Potential Part Time Talent

thisTom, good choices, I hope WHJJ is looking to dump Imus for a local broadcaster. There are three glaring problems in the WHJJ schedule

1) Geoff Charles - he needs to go because he is a lousy lousy host and he seems to not like the new AAR format. Either way, reclaiming those two hours would be just fine with most liberal listeners.

2) Randi and Arlene - to give WHJJ a really good local/national mix...I have posted manytimes to move Arlene to the 9am-12pm slot. Arlene would be awesome in this slot and then you have a morning local host and a mid-morning local host
Then Randi can be live in a blue state from 3 to 7. The station up in Boston isn't doing it. They have Ed Schultz on...so the Providence/Boston area has Randi live....like she should be in Drive time.

Locally this is a ratings bonanza for WHJJ..Rhodes will crush WPRO's Dan Yorke and Arlene will crush WPRO's Steve Kass.

3) Mornings - Imus must go. Thats a simple plan. It would make sense to do the following.

5am - Rachel Maddow
6am to 9am - Jay Diamond or Jay Diamond/cohost - Maybe Kerri Rodrigues - who is a employee who is not getting the play she deserves

NOTE: Tom you have said that Diamond can host mornings...right...if he can then he is the best local host for this time slot..if he can't host mornings give him a lot from 7pm to 10pm....then hire Mark Levine (who i think is pretty good as well...)

Suggested Schedule

5am -6am: Maddow
6am- 9am: Local Host (Diamond, Levine, Diamond/Rodrigues, Levine/Rodrigues)
9am-12pm: Arlene Violet
12n -3pm: Franken
3pm -7pm: Rhodes
7pm-10pm: Diamond (if not mornings), Majority Report live, Springer delay
10am -1am: Malloy
1am - 4am: Springer delay/majority Report (delay)
4am - 5am: America in the Morning

weekends: Need one good local host:

Karel as you suggested from KGO would be great for weekends, or Diamond or Levine as long as the host is live and local.

How about a simulcast......?

Re: Lots of Potential Part Time Talent

> How about a simulcast......?

I'm just trying to point out the fallacy of:

A) Listing every possible "liberal talk show host"
B) Assuming they're just chomping at the bit to go national or air full-time on mid-market stations like WHJJ, because they may be part-time elsewhere.

Karel is a California creature. He wouldn't last five minutes in Rhode Island. For one, it doesn't provide him with a plug into the entertainment world (aside from perhaps driving to NYC). KGO is a prestige station, and probably pays him pretty well for even a weekend gig in market #4. I'm guessing it's more than WHJJ would be willing to pay for a full-time gig in a market that size, and for KGO, Karel does the show from his Long Beach, CA home.

There's absolutely no logic "floating" his name as a host in Providence, RI.
