Ricci Ware Radio Show Axed-KTSA

Considering the other changes BMP and Landis have made to KTSA, I'm not surprised. I suspect that this move would have happened when Brad Messer was sent packing, if Ricci weren't celebrating his 50th anniversary in broadcasting around the same time.

I just wonder where the changes will end.

BTW, there are some particularly scathing reader comments on Jeanne Jakle's blog at the link in the OP.

Ricci's last weekday show happened today. He told many stories about the old days and had many guests from SA radio's past, including Sonny Melendres, Bruce Hathaway, and Bill Scidek (sp?). There were also some on-air pats on the back from Red McCombs, Gov. Rick Perry and Howard Peak.

Its amazing how few people have bothered to post any response to this article about a 'radio legend'? Since its posting only 2 replies. This one makes 3. I guess people either really don't care about jimboob or just don't like him. I also wonder why no one, not even that article in the local birdcage liner, ( a lot of people were glad to see him go) mentioned his abusive and somewhat controversial rants on the old KBUC 107 fm way back in 1979-1980. He used to partner up with another controversial local figure, exKENS-redneck-weatherman Jud Ashmore. If I remember correctly, they used to foam at the mouth about the usual redneck gripes, people on welfare, minorities, liberals etc. They also held numerous rallies, usually against Iran, (the hostage thing was in full swing at that time). I don't remember how long they were on the air, because, thanks to Pres Carter and his 'misery index', I had to join the military in order to pay for my education. I was certainly surprised when I returned later in the year to find that KBUC fm, redneck music (Urban Cowboy time) had been replaced by KVAR fm(?), a spanish music format station. Or was KVAR on 104.5? Anyway, KBUC fm's country format had been replaced by a spanish one. All that was a long, long time ago in galaxy far, far away. And I was just as surprised when Ware returned to KTSA as a talk show host. I guess most people have short memories, but I remember what he used to say way back then and expected to hear some of it again. I didn't like him then and I still don't like him now, no matter how neutered his 'redneckedness' had become in order to avoid sensitivities and please sponsors. Maybe thats why hardly anyone bother to post anything about this 'radio legend'.
And who the hell listens to AM radio during primetime on a Sunday evening? Who listens to AM period (other that morning kamikaze commute)? I'll give it 3 months, 1 quarter, and he'll be replaced by some other syndicated, homogenized, satellite fed fecal material. Firing people the nice way, in slow motion.

1st of 5,

I agree with you. Don't expect to hear Ricci Ware for long on Sunday evenings.
His days are numbered on KTSA.

Here are a few of my memories of this S.A. 'Radio Legend' as a young child.

Back in 1963 and 1964, Ricci Ware had his own teen dance show on KENS-TV
called, "The Ricci Ware Show". What sticks out in my mind is seeing Trey
or Ricci Jr dancing on a table when they were only two or three years old.
Ricci told me he took him to his T.V. show.

There was one stunt he did for for KONO-AM 860 where he stayed awake for
six days straight on the station back in 1964. The KONO DJs would report on his condition. Three days into the stunt it was reported that his Dr. ordered
him not to drive his car. When he finally gave up on this stint, they reported that
he would sleep for over 24-36 hours straight.

Ricci said on the air last week that he was on KTSA for 51 year.
But he was also on KONO in the 60s and KBUC-FM in the the late 70s
and early 80s.

"Firing people the nice way, in slow motion" Isn't that the truth. Like him or not he deserves respect for his longevity. Too many talented local "voices" are tossed aside for something cheaper.

Okay, since no one else will say it I will.

Ricci is great. He's a radio legend in San Antonio and he has provided people with a ton of entertainment over the years.

But he was OLD. It is time for him to retire. We can talk nostalgia all we want here, but let's also face facts. Ricci was slowing down and with KTSA sounding like a News/Talk station from 20 years ago and WOAI having a higher energy delivery, KTSA has to do something to try to compete with that.

I'll agree that local voices are being tossed aside for something cheaper. That's happening all over the country.

But, Ricci wasn't just 'tossed aside for something cheaper.' It was also just time for him to go.

Again, I love the guy and am proud that SA has guys like him and Bob Guthrie who have been a part of the radio scene forever. They are amazing people with careers that most radio talent can only dream of. But, let's be honest with each other.

Hey...I know a lot of you are going to get angry...guess most of CC's people are in here.

However..WOAI is not a great news talk station...KTSA is more listener friendly and community oriented.

WOAI has Rush and that is great but the format is scattered and annoying. The Imaging is usually not what I would call contemporary, and I wish they would FRESHEN IT UP and get with the times...

I want entertainment and news/traffic/weather all in the same station. Play some better music and efx.
Buy some large Market Voicework, Try something.

CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP...and it sounds it.

BLAUGH....

I agree. For half of the year, the station brands itself "Spurs Radio" and for the other half, it's "News Radio." With only 2 local shows on weekdays to KTSA's 4, WOAI doesn't exactly fly its flag prominently in the local community.

As far as WOAI's patchwork programming, it's a shame that Glenn Beck's show is buried in the AM, because it's much more entertaining than Hannity or Rush. For me, local on KTSA > syndicated on WOAI. But the CC flagship station seems to be handcuffed to the corporate programming deals.

I didn't love Ricci's show. It had become my least favorite show on KTSA.

Notably, the show had slipped in the last couple of years. After his cochlear implant surgery, Ricci apparently became incapable of doing a show that featured phoner guests and callers at the same time. I found it maddening that he would always wait until after the phoner guest to take callers on the topic!

I'm sure Ricci's unwillingness to use email or look things up on the Internet didn't endear him to the station's management either.
