It was just announced that Rich Brenner, veteran sportscaster of WGHP 8 and a friend of mine collapsed and died of a heart attack at the age of only 65. My sincere condolences to all of his
family, whom I was friends with.. God Bless Rich Brenner
 
I only talked to him once a long time ago and a couple of times on facebook since (not including seeing him on tv and WZTK), but he always seemed like a great guy.
RIP Rich.
 
He was familiar in the Triangle area as well, having been sports anchor at WRAL and WTVD, before moving to WGHP. My prayers for his family as well.
 
WGHP broke into Daytona Coverage last night with the announcement and it was very apparent this morning that it has it the WGHP family very hard. There are plenty of Rich Brenner stories being posted on Facebook; I can only hope that many of those will be reposted outside of Facebook's walls.

I never worked directly with Rich; but he was up there with Charlie Harville when it came to being honest and caring about sports and the fans.

Rich had suffered from several heart attacks over the years and was aware of the issues. We talked about that a few times since he announced that he had suffered his first. Most of his were minor and I don't think he had any by-passes performed.
 
Rich and i shook hands twice, but we sorta followed each other around.
i was in Norfolk when he was in Portsmouth. he moved to Raleigh for a
job, and two months later, i did too. he went to Chicago, which was the
HQ of my company, then he moved to the Triad. meanwhile, i got married
and moved closer to Greensboro. now that he's in Heaven, when it is my
time, i hope to follow.
 
When I was Big Mo's producer over at 1590 Rich would always be very gracious with his time, good guy, he will be missed
 
The Winston-Salem Journal expects you to pay if you read more than 10 local articles on their web site per month. I get around this to some extent by going to different libraries, but then what happens if someone else wants to look at their site? I see the real papers at one library and make a note of what I'd like to see in more detail or print out.

At long last I benefitted from this, but not really. After I saw the news, which I wouldn't have with my normal routine, I knew I had to rush home for the 5:30 news. Actually, it wasn't quite what I expected because they have a 5:00 newscast. And I didn't have an easy way to watch at 6. Then I remembered a lot of stuff is online and I went online at a library where I had sound. Wow. It did hit them hard. I did appreciate the chance to see that.

I don't care about sports but his was a familiar face and voice from back when I bothered to watch more of the newscast. These days I turn on the TV and wait for the "Roy's Folks" music or his voice, but I can hear stuff while I'm waiting. But I watched a lot more of their newscast back in the day and this news makes me sad.
