Rich Fields

There is a press release from Rich Fields explaining his departure from The Price Is Right. The show is conducting on air auditions. Presently, a stand up comic is at the mic. Don't understand the reasoning for making a change as Fields is really very very good. Some say the producers want more of a variety type show, however, with the exception of Fields being replaced the show appears to stay true to it's image.

Carey or somebody is turning this show into a big joke. No wonder ratings are down. Older folks are not watching him...........so they must be going after younger tattoo, ear-ring wearing, motorcycle, rocker types, which probably aren't the loyalist of viewers.

And the older viewers are valuable....how? How long can one exist on Scooter Store and Colonial Penn ads? Loyalty is all well and good, but meaningless to the bottom line if advertisers don't want to reach them. As for tattoos...look around, they're the new mainstream. Earrings...also mainstream. Rockers...oh, yeah, also mainstream. Hmmm, how awful.

Anyone also think the decline in ratings can be in part attributed to (a) having the oldest audience of any of the broadcast network daytime shows (and thus the closest to heading to the big ol' recliner in the sky) and (b) a larger selection of viewing choices? After all, Price was down a good third of more in viewers from its glory days before Drew Carey ever set foot in the studio.

I'm not liking this new announcer guy. And neither is my mom or grandma. Rich Fields was very good. I haven't noticed any significant changes thus far on TPIR. Those running things. Should reconsider their decision & bring Rich Fields back..

Also, i thought the models were going to be 'actually talking' this season?

Technically, that would make them "spokesmodels," wouldn't it? ::)

On yesterday's season 39 premiere, while a rather elderly, emotional contestant was taking her time coming on down, I heard the new guy sarcastically say "as we enter Season 40..." I understand the staff's frustrations with people who taking up more than their fair share of valuable camera/air time, but I don't think the announcer making fun of the contestants (even if it is in that indirect manner) is the way to go.

(And yes, before someone says it, I didn't have a problem with Bob Barker making the same types of comments towards contestants. When you've hosted the show for as long as he did, and you have the respect and adoration of millions of fans across multiple generations, you can get away with a lot more than an announcer who's on his first day and isn't even guaranteed to have the job.)

On the season premiere, I did hear Lanisha say "I'm sorry" as she revealed a price (in Most Expensive, I believe) -- she knew the contestant had lost.

Yesterday's Price is Right was surprising to me because I didn't pay much attention to Rich Fields' announcement of his departure. I didn't hear about Drew Carey's weight loss until Craig Ferguson mentioned about it on his show the other night.

I've seen Drew Carey on various shows throughout the years, so it took my mind a while to adjust to Carey's new thinner look. I'm not sure what to think about this drastic change to his look.

I liked Rich Fields as the announcer, but as for the new guy I don't know. I didn't watch the entire show so I can't properly comment on his performance yet.

Did you miss this from the very first post in this thread?

Not at all. I saw that the guy does stand up comedy. But that doesn't mean that he belongs behind the mic and should be able to freely take shots at contestants.

I think that's part of their MASTER PLAN....

The announcer cracks jokes
The models talk
Bands play on stage

Anything they can think of to give the show some SPUNK
and take the microscope off of Carey (and his blandness).

There isn't just one new announcer as Brad Sherwood is also going to be taking that spot over at some point as well.

Today, Wednesday, the announcer (can't remember his name) did an ad-lib that kind of stepped on Carey and really wasn't too funny. The model had a speaking part. Reminds me of an old adage in baseball. Umpires are a very important part of each game and when you don't notice them they've done a great job. Kind of feel like that regarding game show announcers and models. They are an important part of the fabric yet blend into the production. Pretty girls showing prizes and a voice describing prizes are part of the texture. The MC brings it all together. Seems Price Is right is getting too many moving parts and drawing attention to elements that should be part of the scenery.

I would add that this show really isn't about the announcer. It is about the host and the games and the contestants. Sure, the announcer is a cog in the system, but relatively unimportant. The guy on today was OK, certainly not outstanding, but who cares? Drew needs to be Drew, despite the weight loss. If they keep the games exciting, and Drew just is Drew, then it will be fine. If I'm not mistaken, this is the last remaining daytime network game show on the air. Perhaps it needs to be put into some sort of network preservation status, like old classic buildings. Not likely.

After all these years, I suppose the words "A New CAR ! ! !" have lost some of thier magic at creating excitement on TPIR. ;)

Well......At least Freemantle seems to be putting some kind of effort into keeping the "Price Is Right" franchise viable, which is more than what Procter and Gamble did in essentially allowing its last two soaps to die slow, agonizingly painful deaths.

I suspect this tweaking of "Price" may not work....but I could be wrong.

Did anyone ever put more excitment in the words "A new car" than Johnny Olson? Funny...Olson emphasized "NEW" Fields emphasized "CARRRRRRRR" Roddy had the gift as well.

How excited would a contestant be to win.... A USED CAR!!!!

That would be behind curtain #2 on "Let's Make A Deal"! :D

I must disagree with you here. Because of the trademark "Come on DOWN!" on TPIR, the announcer has a much bigger role on this show than most. I do believe the announcer, the phrase, and having the contestants run down front are much of what made TPIR successful. Years ago, as kids when TNPIR started, we actually ran around the house shouting "Come on DOWN!" As a result, TPIR distinguished itself from the other "boring" game shows of the early 70's. Dennis James' nighttime TPIR hosting (as does Drew Carey's hosting now) proves that the success of the show doesn't depend on having the best host.

Barker used to say that the real stars of the show are the contestants. He was right. People aren't tuning in for Carey and people aren't tuning in for the announcer or the models either. As long as the contestants are there having fun, that show will be just fine. I don't know the reason for the announcer change. I just have guesses (which are probably all wrong). I've heard something about them wanting to make it more of a variety show. Something about Live bands and more interaction with the announcer. It seems to me that Drew is just trying to give all his friends a job. That theory would also spill over to other programs. Wayne Brady on Let's Make a Deal for one. CBS seems to really like Drew and it definitely seems like he has some influence in that building.
