Rich McGuire

I suppose that most of you have heard that Rich McGuire, formerly of WILM, WJIC passed away last Tuesday. He also operated a Pirate radio station, WTFC 640 AM, for about 42 years. I replaced Rich at WILM in 1967 ... my first radio job. He was kind enough to train me before he left to serve in the Air Force. I remember, one Sunday morning, he decided to fire up the Scully Lathe transcription disc machine and show me what it could do. Come Monday he caught hell for that! He also gave me the grand tour of the WILM studios including the sponsor's booth that dated from the "live" radio days before I was born. Once he took me upstairs to see the old WDEL "suite" where they were housed before they moved to Shipley Road. RIP, Rich, and thanks for everything.

We, at WVUD, are very saddened by the loss of our friend Rich. He was a valuable contributor to WXDR and WVUD. In digging through some personal tapes, I found a promo that Rich had done for a live remote that I conducted as an undergrad. We've posted this on wvud.org/bigbus.mp3 so that any friends of Rich can hear his voice again. Rich sure loved that old school echo/reverb effect :)

Rich was a year or so older than me and we both grew up with the radio bug, both as ham operators and broadcasters. I hadn't talked with him since I was at WNRK and he at WVUD, around 1992. Great person and radio guy.
