I was watching weekend update on SNL and they tributed Richard Pryor with a scene of him and Chevy Chase doing "word association". Classic.

It was funny, but I wonder what kind of response they're going to get for allowing the "n" word to be used. Some things that were acceptable on TV then aren't acceptable now.
______________

About a year ago, NBC aired a retrospective of SNL in the 70s (just like the one for the 80s that aired about a month ago) that had that same Chevy/Richard skit on it. In prime time, no less. I would guess that they must not have caught much flak for that back then to have aired it again, this time in late-night.

Honestly, what makes it acceptable is Pryor's character's response to the word.

"Junglebunny!" "Honky!"
"Spade!" "Honky honky!"
"(n-word)" "DEAD honky!"

The laugh doesn't come from the word itself, but the response.

Also remember that Pryor himself used the word frequently in his routines, and obviously had no problem with it in the proper context.

And also, it is considered one of the landmark moments in the entire three-decade history of "Saturday Night Live".

Tina Fey mentioned at Richard's appearence changed the show forever. I taped last night's entire broadcast. It's been awhile since I've seen the show. The "Word Association" sketch is right up there with "The Last Voyage Of the Starship Enterprise"(with Belushi as Kirk) as one of my favorite sketches. Last night's show opened with clips of a few of Alec Baldwin's previous appearences.
______________

And how about Shatner at the Star Trek convention?

"Get a life!"
