Richie Whitt... Really!?!

Richie Whitt of The Dallas Observer is trying out a new Q&A feature where he answers reader's questions... I found this one especially interesting... If he really believes this then there are a lot of people in D/FW who "can't keep up".

Q: Do you think Ben and Skin have anything?

A: As a radio consumer who liked them before the birth of 105.3 The Fan, yes, I do. I find them remarkably witty, quick on their mental feet. Generally, the folks who don't like them are the same folks who can't keep up.
::)

Thoughts? ???

Well Jeff he is entitled to his opinion. If you are not up on urban culture then Ben and Skin will bore you. Everyone has a preference.

I understand he is entitled to his opinion... I was just a little taken aback on his suggestion that people that didn't care for them are somehow dimwitted. I'd like to think that I am up on urban culture but I do not find their humor or opinions interesting. If you want an example of clever wit check out Dean Lewis on The Jagger Show. Just MY opinion.

But, I also find Wanda Sykes, Jim Gafffigan, Mitch Fatal, Louis Black, Carlos Mencia, Jon Stewart and Dennis Leary hilarious so what do I know? ;D

It's Lewis Black, try to keep up.

I guess if I was up on my urban culture I would have spelled Mr. Black's first name correctly. There is also another fav of mine - Gary Steinfeld... ;)

I get it Richie, it just isn't funny. What is with that station? One minute they are talking Mavs, the next call they are talking the best comic book heros? Jagger sucks, but at least he stays on topic. I have been popping in and out the last couple of days and as hard as they try, they don't have it. Even Russ was better than this crap.

Oh, and I love how the hosts throw out they are getting tons of phone calls, texts and emails, but they never go to them. Good ploy Gavin.

Comedians have long used the excuse for a horrible performance that they were 'too hip for the room'. That the yokels in (fill in your city, anywhere but NYC or LA) are just too dumb/uncool to get the comedians witty performance.

Richie's opinion sounds a lot like that. That if you don't get B&S it's because you're not cool enough, not into the cool TV shows they're talking about, not smart enough to keep up, etc.

Kind of elitist, and more importantly, totally ignores the fact that no matter how cool they may be, how 'smart' their show is, if listeners don't like the show, it won't stay on the air. Ratings and revenue drive radio, not percevied coolness.

Excellent point. There's been a lot of TV shows cancelled in the past few years that claimed they were too "smart" for the audience.

One more thing guys, lets not forget its the F'n Observer! A total rag of a paper. I only pick up the Observer to wipe my windows clean after spraying them with Windex.

I prefer the young & hip sports talk show hosts, who make references to urban & pop culture, over the old, crusty, overly-opinionated, know-it-all hosts anyway... and I don't have enough aluminum foil and coat hangers to pick up the other station.

Also don't forget that he works for 105.3 often so his opinion means nothing, just like the way he protected the Ticket during the greggo stuff sitting on the story until they told him he could write it. He is always trying to get an on air gig so he kisses up to all of them. The observer should fire him for the way he covers the sports stations....

Hmmmm... Someone's making an awful lot of assumptions here. Got any valid proof to back up any of those claims?

What proof do you need? He has tried out for gigs on the Ticket and 105.3, I think he still does some weekend stuff for the The Fan, and I know for a fact that he sat on the Ticket story until he got the "Go ahead" to release it, he admitted as much on his blog.....if you are going to cover a story you can't be "buddies" with the people you write about.

I see where Whitt is coming from. I loved Ben and Skin on the week-ends and for a change of pace as fill-ins. But against GAC and the Hardline, they just don't have enough in the bag.

Try explaining that to people like the late Al Brumely...

Newsflash, quite a number of reporters have been known to cover stories about people they are buddies with.

Do you think they pay him with money or some kind of batering system for his writing?
