Richmond Radio

Is Richmond radio so dull and boring that nobody has anything to post? I lived there from 1970 to 2000 and often wonder what is happening. I know a "Big Lee" tribute page was discussed, but never appeared. What gives?

I lived in Richmond from '73-'77 and remember only one FM and one AM (WRVA) that was worth anything. Couldn't wait to leave. For the capitol of a major state it was as unimpressive as Sacramento - and just as backwater.

As many different Top-40 stations as there were in Richmond, etc., you'd think someone would start a tribute page!

Years ago ( around 2001 ) I remember seeing a WLEE tribute site. Or a part of one at least. They had posted copies of the WLEE charts and said airchecks were coming soon.

Havent seen that site since.

I came there in 1970 and was really surprised to find competing 24/7 Top 40 stations----WTVR AM and Big Lee. Richmond has had one of the longest running (and pioneering FM CHR's) in WRVQ and one of the countries most continuous and successful AC stations in WTVR-FM. Richmond had many unique personalities including Kirby Carmichael,Shane, Terry Young, Alden Aaroe, Paige Wilson,Dick Hungate, and much more. I believe WRXL was an early pioneer in it's format. I realize that Richmond ain't Noo York Citee, but it seemed pretty good for it's size. And lets not forget Don Dale and the WTVR truck or Charlie Fishburn's hair!

that should be "get Steve, Mr. Beach ,Leonard. And Millard the Mallard, Garret Chester, Bill Bevins, WPLZ and Philly Phil bringing major rap artists to a City sponsored job fair and bringing down the Richmond Center------Richmond isn't dull!

For me, the only notable thing about Richmond is Q94. They are, I believe, THE most powerfull station in the USA. 200,000 watts! I just wish I could hear them up here in the DC area (sometimes I can). There is a good blurb about them on wikipedia. ANd I think its comendable for them to stick to the CHR format for over 3 decades. I for one will be sad if they ever do change formats.

WBCT in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is 320kW. Used to be 500kw.

For anybody interested, The Richmond Dept. of Social Services had a job fair in the Richmond Center back in the 80's. Magic 99 did a live remote and without telling anybody, brought in Run DMC. The place went wild. Or anybody remember Rita Bentley and "Dirt Woman" ? The "Into the Blue Radio Revue"? Jess Duboy? Guess not

The problem is that Richmond radio has gotten boring. Not always so...

As mentioned, 94.5 is probably one of the longest-running CHR formats around.
WVGO was a leader in AAA radio on the east coast, and had decent ratings in its heyday
WRXL became the inspiration for WROV in Roanoke and WKRR in Greensboro. Not to mention (arguably) the oldest rock station in Virginia behind WNOR in Norfolk and perhaps WWWV in Charlottesville.
WRIR was one of the first LPFM's to sign on and certainly one of the most well-run examples in the nation.

Not to mention all the different frequencies of NPR affiliates in Richmond, which has always done surprisingly well.
