Always loved listening to Rick do 'Dinner Across America.' Funny stuff. It's amazing to listen to an old aircheck of KMEL and hear how much it's changed over the years. I guess that evolution is how it's stayed successful, but it's interesting to compare heritage stations and how some change a lot and some not much. Until recently, KOIT was KOIT...forever. KGO was KGO. Even in other markets, KIIS is still a Pop station like it was in 1990. Same for WHTZ. KMEL was the Top 40 for San Francisco in the Rick Chase days, but it's remained successful after completely evolving into a Hip Hop/R&B station, all while still being 106 KMEL. It's also pretty different from Power 106/L.A. which is much more dance leaning and different from all the mid-west and east coast Hip Hop stations that play a lot more true Urban. Curious if anyone has thoughts on why some heritage stations stay completely true to what they are while a handful totally evolve into something else, but remain successful?
