RICK DEES AND ARCHIVED WEEKLY TOP 40S

There has been much talk about the playlists of WZGC, WAPW and WQXI.

I stumbled across this recently.... Rick Dees has archived whole editions of his 4 hour shows on his Web site. Going through a couple of the 80s and 90s shows brings back memories of what Z-93, Power 99 and 94Q spun.

Have fun:

1980s shows: http://www.rick.com/media/20
1990s shows: http://www.rick.com/media/21
2000s shows: http://www.rick.com/media/23

The best part is that there are no commercials on these shows.

I think I've heard him mention 94 Q on one of his shows. You know one of my favorite segments on American Top 40, Casey's Top 40, and Rick Dees were the shout outs to radio stations carrying the shows. I'm sure that in part fueled my interest for radio stations around the world.
I think mentioning radio stations by name really hit home for me as far as how big not only were these shows, but how big these hits were. Some of them weren't being played on my local CHRs, but they were obviously hits somewhere. Made me curious to know what all these stations sounded like.

Rick Dees was great! This is where I first heard Lina Santiago, Jocelyn Enriquez, and Angelina in Atlanta radio - through the Rick Dees show.

Then I moved (back) to the west coast and BAM! I was in heaven!
Times have surely changed since then..

I have caught his and Casey's shows on XM. Pretty cool time machine if you ask me. Although hearing some of the spots from the 80's might be kinda neat.

I'd much rather have Dees on Sunday nights versus Dawson McCallister. However, a great deal of top 40 stations across the country dropped him about the same time as he left his Rhythmic AC station in LA and started broadcasting from rick.com around the same time we dropped him for Dawson McCallister. A lot of Hot AC stations still play his countdown show. His sister lives here in Marietta and his cousin lives near where I work in Stone Mountain. I asked him once about ten years ago if he was related to Rick and he said yes. The next thing I knew I had Weekly Top 40 hats, posters, and a t-shirt along with an autographed photo of Rick and a Disco Duck album on my front door step the next day. Great guy. I miss listening to him on FM100 in Memphis late on Sunday nights in the 80s and on Q56 WHBQ in Memphis back in the 70s when he was a DJ there along with Wink Martindale from Tic-Tac-Doe.

I read an article in July that Casey has officially retired. He still had his Hot AC and AC shows still playing across the country but abruptly announced his retirement with Shinedown's song playing as his final hit. I sure wish Star had played him in the 90s, or the Beat during its 1999-2001 top 40 stint, or Q100 in the early parts of this decade. I emailed the PDs several times of these stations and their excuse was that he was too old sounding for their audience or that he was already being played in the market (on Peach 94.9). I know several markets at the time that played both versions simultaneously on different stations. Oh well, that's the past now. I have several audio recordings from the past of AT40 and Rick from stations I visited across the nation. Good memories.
