For the radio historian in you, it was 7/11/1981. I am going thru some old airchecks of mine tonight (that I personally taped) and found Rick Dees first show. Saturday night July 11, 1981. He was on from 11 to 12 midnight followed by A.J. Martin. He sure sounded great! It was a full personality show with some of his 93/KHJ cast of characters. One day I'm going to have to figure out how to preserve these airchecks online. I do have a LOT of L.A. radio histor...on cassette tapes.

A great way to preserve your airchecks would be to donate copies to reelradio.com

Uncle Ricky has a fine website that's a gold mine of radio's greats.

As an aircheck collector I'd love to have copies of what you have and transfer them to digital... but have you ever considered or, do you know about reelradio.com?

The Curator there will take care of what you'd like by preserving them online. Probably not all at once but over time, depending on what all you send him and the quality etc.

Check it out at reelradio.com

Just a thought. No I don't even know the guy, I don't have anything he wants for the type of site it is - recorded by me - but sounds like you might.

I came across a lot of good stuff tonight (all personally taped) including: Ten-Q becoming K-Hits (I airchecked the AM and FM at the same time so I have the first set of Ten-Q as spanish - which was mostly english), 197? KHJ Super Easter Egg remote from Tower Records in Hollywood w/ Billy Pearl (incredible), K-West format change from AOR to CHR - great Bobby Ocean produced piece between the two formats, KNX-FM to KKHR format change, (former KIIS-FM's) Big Ron doing Urban (Overnights) at FM 92 The Beat in 1991 and lots of KIIS in various AC and CHR format stages from 1980. I use to love to tape the AM and FM at the same time when they weren't simulcasting (since it was a different jock but the same music). I have KIIS-AM in stereo. I owned an AM stereo radio at the time.

I came across K-B-I-G (!986) when it was a very light AC "Easy Music K-B-I-G". Very little processing and you'd have to let your song die out before moving to the next element. Lighter than KOST. Horrible.

I have an extensive collection of London and Engleman morning shows from K-West 106 and Magic 106 (I almost forgot they made it briefly to the next format until I listened tonight). They really were great together.

I have to check out reelradio.com
Never been to the site.

Glenn's Goodies!

I for one would love to hear your Frasier Smith Tapes, and more Big Ron, without the Beat. How bout' Ron at KROQ & KFI? Anyway you can make Uncle Ricky a Cassette or Reel Tape, and he will convert it. Again, your own dedicated page at his Site, you'll be well respected there!

What was the date of the K-WEST changing to top-40? It was around that time, probably only a month or so before.

I heard that Chuck Martin considered Dees for K-WEST but went with London and Engelman instead. At the time, I liked L&E better. I still think K-WEST could have been a real thorn to KIIS-FM had Martin stayed on as PD instead of Jeff Salgo messing the station up and making it Magic 106.

It debuted on 6/24/1981 - a Wednesday at 6 PM (last song on the AOR format was Stairway to Heaven, then a brief few seconds of dead air to change the processing which became VERY compressed, then into a long but great piece of Bobby Ocean production bridging the two formats. BTW, Bobby Ocean did do some shifts on the AOR format - 106 K-West - for a week or two before the end. They are a blast to listen to as well). I have a scoped and unscoped aircheck of the first hours of K-West. McFadden & Whitehead's Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now was the first song on (Top 40) K-West 106. Chuck Martin was on for one hour followed by Pat Garrett and then Benny Martinez did the remainder of his shift. London & Engleman started the next morning at 6 AM-10 AM.

Yes, I agree Salgo did ruin Century Broadcasting's Magic 106. But K-West's problem was really Tim Sullivan as g.m.. He was way too cheap. Didn't put anything into promotions. Same problem K-Hits had when he was g.m. there. KIIS went big with their promotions right away. I don't think anyone could have beaten KIIS and De Francesco. It was a great team effort that made KIIS the winner it was.

I was out with a who's who of current and former L.A. market vets tonight and they encouraged me to get my airchecks out there somewhe

hi..do you have any airchecks from KMET, KLOS and KIIS FM that were taped between 1985-1989? I might be interested in some tapes...I also collect airchecks and might stuff you might like.

I remember the switch. I also remember being so excited when I realized they were playing the jock jingles ("ego logos" as someone called them). I actually have some of them on cart; I interned at Magic 106 (Emmis version), and they gave them to me instead of throwing them away.

I think Bobby Ocean was actually on prior to that. I asked him once a long time ago due to the aircheck I heard of him doing AOR. I can't recall his exact answer, but I do remember it wasn't just the few weeks before the switch.

Any chance of getting copies of some of your tapes? I absolutely loved top-40 K-WEST. I have a recording of the switchover I made myself as well as what I have from CA Aircheck, but little else.

Probably true. I think I liked K-WEST partly because they were mostly the KHJ air staff, and followed the formattics so well. So did KIIS-FM, though.
