RICK DEES IN SAN FRANCISCO

...on 92.7 KREV. And on sister stations in Palm Springs and Vegas. As of today, apparently.

Dees' quote via All Access: "I'm just so excited to have fun and keep it local in SAN FRANCISCO, LAS VEGAS and PALM SPRINGS."

Nice to know Rick will be back on the radio keeping it local in three cities he's never lived in, all from his Hollywood studio. Can't wait to hear him mispronounce Concord, San Rafael, Gough Street, etc. as he 'keeps it local.'

I didn't think radio could get any lower

Nice to promote this. Press release ON May 6th, the same day as he premieres!! Way to go Promotion department!

Very much just like the original launch, in Sept 2010.

And the "Promotion dept." probably consists of the station secretary down in Palm Desert.

I don't think I'd characterize a voice-tracked show on a low-power, almost non-rated (in an Arbitron sense) radio station as "radio getting lower." It's more like an insult to Dees' waning fame that his show isn't being carried by a station higher up on the ratings ladder.

These VTed shows have been around for a few years now - whether or not the DJ is pretending to be local. At least Rick Dees can be truly amusing, which is more than I can say for...say...Ryan Seacrest on Star 101.3.

I like Rick, think he deserves better, but am happy he gets to do some form of what he loves. He probably shouldn't have used the phrase "keeping it local" when referring to doing a show in three different cities, but that's minor (or maybe he has a more wicked sense of irony than he's let on till now).

Anyway, Charlie Tuna does VT'd shows with local content...why not Rick?

"How 'bout them..............Giants!"

I think Gil Gross is the only radio personality who can do a show from across the country and appear to be local. He's an extremely quick study and he's also lived in a bunch of places, too.

Even before he moved to the Bay Area several years back and was still doing fill-in from across the country, he had learned about the minutiae of this area. I'm sure he could tell us the exact date the Key System stopped running trains on the bottom deck of the Bay Bridge and the best taqueria in Fremont. He's just that way.

Localization is a lot more than looking at the web page of the local weekly from across the country. It just doesn't work.

First, I'm a huge fan of Gil's work and have been for a long time. He's absolutely one of the best broadcasters I've ever heard.

But...there's a huge difference between what Gil Gross does and the morning guy on a music station. Especially in 2013. You're talking about cracking the mic 4 times an hour tops for anything more than a positioner. Rick's not going to have to pronounce Gough Street. Neither, most likely, would a live jock. The traffic or news reporter? Sure. But once live commercials and tags went away, so did 95 percent of street and address mentions for the jock.

The sad truth for those of us who did and loved personality radio with heavy community involvement, is that Rick Dees, who proved in Memphis and L.A. that he's one of us, is going to be on stations where that's a low priority for the listener.

Are you sure he didn't say "keeping it low, Cal?" Especially if he's on a low-powered station. Or looking to stay trim.
Either way. You know that Rick, always the kidder!

I doubt Rick even wrote the quote. He was just the one ending up looking silly with such a ridiculous statement.
Rick is pushing 80 now? Many don't know he has his own Pie?

Rick’s Five-Star Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie
Pecans, chocolate, and bourbon combine with Rick’s Famously Unbeatable Pie Crust to send your taste buds into orbit!

1 cup dark corn syrup
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup Woodford Reserve bourbon (or your favorite Bourbon), or water
4 large eggs
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
2 tsp. cornmeal
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. salt

Serve slightly warm, and with a scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!

KREV has gotten so bad that many people I know who used to tolerate it now have bailed on it completely. It's a shame that Royce didn't continue with the programming that the former Energy 92.7 (KNGY) had; they were making decent revenue but couldn't handle the debt service. But Royce bought it for a fifth of what Flying Bear paid for the stick.

Well, yeah, that's exactly it. He's probably just holding onto it until the market for stations heats up and he can make a profit. On the other hand, just because the asking price of a commodity goes down by 80% does not mean it's going to come back up again, ever.
