No, you're just perceptive and media is insulting your intelligence.

My 20-year old daughter and I were talking the other day about how lately NPR is having to apologize, retract and correct stories the following day...and it's almost always because the reporter decided to use a cute line or a pop reference instead of being clear. It's a slippery slope...and for those of us who saw commercial music radio stations go from having some of the best news operations in the country to having a sidekick read headlines out of the Life section of USA Today, it's scary, because we know how quickly it can all go to hell.

Yes and even the commercials are stupider, I shake my head at some of them. Americans in general are just plain stupid and radio and TV as well as the movies are playing to less discerning audiences. Not a snob - just ill informed: remember "Ring Around the Collar," "Three's Company," Paper Lace singing "The Night Chicago Died," The Bad News Bears Go To Japan?"

Well, now, radio-darn, you're insulting his intelligence. I don't think nmoore is ill-informed. Sure, the things you mentioned existed and were hugely popular at the time...but there were alternatives...places you could go on the same device (radio, TV, movie screen) for the antidote. That's what's getting harder to find.

I find the contrast between "Mercedes-Benz of Laguna Niguel" spots (above my league) and "1-800-LOANMART" (well below my league) to be very stark.

And the spots targeting the "lower end" are quite dumb. Does anyone really believe they can get $500 dollars in free gas money? Or a free laptop? Simply by calling an 1-800 number?

At least L.A. has the MB Laguna Niguel spots. Here in Phoenix, advertising appears to have calcified to fit the perceived demos of the station. If it's an AC station, the spots assume I'm a 33-year old mom whose life will be complete if I find the right yoga class. The classic rock and sports stations yell at me to buy trucks, drink beer and have lunch at a strip club. And the news/talk stations want me to either buy male enhancements, a burial plot or both (what a way to go).

I must be one of those odd ducks. Born in 1970, I danced the dialed from KFI to XETRA to KHJ (Car tunes era) on the AM band to KIQQ, KMET, KNAC, KQLZ, KROQ (Hell, even KKHR) on the FM side. All each had something I wanted to hear at the time. Lohman & Barkley are still radio Gods in my book, the cream of the crop. I even have a few Hudson & Landry albums but nothing connected to me like L&B did in the late 70's early 80's with them and legendary Bruce Wayne "KFI in the Sky". I suppose I'm a bit of an anomaly since I was listening to this in the outskirts like Palmdale and Visalia and Bakersfield but listen in I did. I learned the freeway systems of Los Angeles having never driven a car for yet another 10 years let alone in Los Angeles. By age 18, I knew the Sepulveda Pass was always a mess, you could count on traffic where the Ventura hits the Santa Ana or that the San Bernardino near the Long Beach Freeway (then the CA-7) was jammed.

I live in Los Angeles now and still don't know where the 4-level is or The Slot despite hearing about it for years prior. I do however, know where the Slauson Cutoff is. ;)

I realize I am not the advertising demo anymore. Perhaps I never really was. Outside of buying records from WEA that Dr. Demento always instructed me to do I don't think I was ever "captured" as an ad mark. All radio did was capture me as a listener. My tastes and preferences run an immeasurable gambit but it always came down to the talent of what I heard.

Be it Mark Chase or Robert W. or The Tuna or even Rick Dees and the countless other nameless jocks I have unfortunate misfortune of not remembering. They all had an impact on me and I dare say shaped me to what I am today. While I am not a radio disc jockey it was always a life long dream. I merely brushed close to my goal working at record stores and attending concerts. Now I do dumb internet radio shows to fulfill my childlike urge. It's enough to satiate my hunger but it'll never be the real thing.

Rob:

Born in 1970? You're 41 or 42. You're still in the money demos of 18-49, 25-49 and 25-54.

The fact is that while most people didn't latch on to stations, personalities and formatics the way we did, their tastes are far broader than media gives them credit for.

The four-level interchange is where the 101 and the 110 meet...just west of Figueroa and north of Temple. It was the first multi-level freeway interchange in the world.

The 4-level is the intersection of the Pasadena and 101 Freeways just north of downtown LA. I always assumed that it was so-called because it was the first four-level interchange and was considered something of an engineering feat at the time.

And long live the good Dr. Demento. There should always be a place for silly novelty records, but unfortunately they are not on the airwaves anymore. Everyone say this together - CONSULTANTS RUIN GOOD RADIO. I know, I know, they aren't interested in Good Radio, they are interested in maximizing profits, listener erosion when you don't faithfully adhere to the list, yada, yada...

I've lived in the LA DMA most of my life and have never heard of The Slot or 4-level. Slauson Cutoff, yes.

Did a little detective work and found info on both items:
The Slot--http://wikimapia.org/1326068/The-Slot

I've got about 45 minutes of Jay from 1991. I'll be happy to get you a copy.
Full Disclosure: it's a little rough I was switching around from Jay to Dees and back to Jay.

They shoulda gotten Jay Thomas and the Morning Zoo back...at least he still does a show that doesn't sound VOICETRACKED.

Speaking of KPWR, I'm always looking for airchecks of Power 106 from the 80s and early 90s. Have any? Let me know!

Sounds great! I can throw one your way, too if you like. Let me know how you'd like to proceed. You can also email: [email protected]

The station returned live on Monday at 5am after the Hot 500 countdown. I did hear a recording of him hosting a few songs on Sunday right before Art Laboe came on.

Dees' Facebook page has this to say:

"We launched a one year marketing campaign with my friends at Clear Channel to increase the awareness and revenue of Hot 92.3. The campaign has been a great success and we look forward to other new shows and marketing strategies with the talented team from Clear Channel in the near future. See you at www.rick.com, plus all over the world with the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 and Daily Dees Radio Show."

KRTH's Ideal Line-Up

Weekdays:

6am-10am........Rick Dees
10am-3pm........Charlie Tuna
3pm-7pm..........Shotgun Tom Kelly
7pm-11pm.........Jo Jo Cookin Kincaid

Weekends:

Jim Carson, Gary Bryan, etc.

Would put that station over-the-top!

So is he out or not? I was listening to the station yesterday and they kept on announcing a live remote for this weekend. Unless I heard wrong, but the commercial kept on airing all morning.

He's probably going to make the appearance. But he's off the morning show. Again, his Facebook post indicates the year on Hot was a "marketing strategy" and that there are likely more to come between Clear Channel and himself.

Agreed. Rick didn't want to put in the effort it would take to seriously win. I thought I'd be streaming KHHT every morning at work, simply for the Dees-KIIS nostalgia. I listened TWICE in one year.

Reminded me of his Movin' 93.9 show: The news guy, Mark Wong, was more enthusiastic and interesting to listen to.

Dees had a illustrious career. There's no shame in a nice, quiet retirement.

I don't necessarily disagree, though I think Jo Jo Kincaid might be considered a bit too high energy for nights. He'd be best in afternoon drive, though, of course, Shotgun is already there and doing great. Actually, when I was in LA, I thought Christina Kelly sounded good - I know she's not an old-timer chosen to make baby boomers like me happy, but I thought she was very smooth and a good choice for nights.

Kincaid put in some time in San Francisco in the mid-0s - first at Classic Hits KFRC (99.7) before it became "Movin' ," then a country station where he mysteriously grew a southern drawl. But he was always great. I think he's in Tampa now.

I suspect Charlie Tuna doesn't need or want to work 5 days a week. No doubt, he has a home-studio where he voice-tracks his syndicated shows. Whether he actually comes in to KRTH studios for his weekend show, I don't know.

Charlie is live in the studio for his weekend shifts. I listen online occasionally, have chatted with him on FB messaging and heard him responding to tweets in real-time.

My God! L.A. stations change talent like I change underwear...weekly. It seems like there's a change on at least one station every week. 8)

Remember the line to the WKRP theme song; "Got tired of packing and unpacking, town to town, up and down the dial..."When was that - 30 years ago? I think it's always been this way, though these days its usually replacing one voice-tracked jock with another voice-tracked jock. In the 60s, most of the Top 40 jocks would come and go, often switching stations between KHJ, KRLA, KFWB, KDAY, etc. The only exceptions were the #1 drive time guys like Morgan and Steele, and even they switched stations once or twice a decade.

It's the same way in San Francisco, and everywhere, I'm sure.

You can find images of quite a few old radio record surveys on line - like the KEWB or KFWB Fabulous Forty. The personalities are all on the front cover. If you check any two a year apart, at least half of the jocks are different.
