Rick Dees - Thoughts?

I have to admit, I am disappointed. He sounds voicetracked. No time and temp, very little Artist/Song mentions, no typical Dees song intro walk-ups with energy. Thought he might be taking calls with welcome back messages.

CC must not be paying him very much at all, so this is the deal we get. My guess is he gets a few minutes each hour to sell and that's how he will get paid. I refuse to blame it on PPMs.

I've listened to the first show and it was indeed very disappointing. This is not the Dees we all know and love. He does sound if it's voicetracked and I also miss his energy. Hopefully he will get back in full swing soon. But if this is it, I don't think it will matter much in the ratings. People who know Dees, expect Dees and this ain't Dees....

What do you expect. Not that much chat on CC stations and KHHT has always been that way when Mike Marino took over in 2004. Most of the jocks dont even talk they are reading liners. I know Rene Taylor and Tony are VT. He just started its the first week give it time

Dutchguy makes a good point though.

CC says Rick's there because of research. People said they want to hear him. The show sounds like the research was interpreted as "they want to hear Rick's voice". That's very different from hearing Rick.

Voicetracking and having a daily Candid Phone and Dees Sleaze is not the Dees experience that those listeners CC is supposedly responding to remember. It's the wacky humor, the interaction with the cast of idiots, the genuine concern for the welfare of other people and from-the-heart generosity to those in need that made Rick Dees a household name in Southern California. That's what listeners bonded with over 25 years and it's what they expect to get again.

As for giving it time, this week should be a big celebration and homecoming...it can start loose and tighten up. Shows (especially these days) almost never start tight and loosen up.

Your right it should be a big deal. When Rick return to Movin there was commericals on tv that helped promote his return. In KHHT case and CC running the show its kinda weak espically with the more music focus in the morning. Does Rick have a female sidekick yet? I heard Karli from KIISFM is doing a few entertainment reports and Jimmy was staying on board for the street team.

Its not voicetracked, it's cut up liners. Almost as if they gave him a few sheets of paper and said read these. The contest payoff with Prince tickets and $100 was weak.

Is this normal for LA?

Vic "The Brick" Jacobs (sports at 6:20am & 8:20am) & Karli Hernandez (Dees Sleaze) will have on air segments. Plus 3 prize giveaways, Candid Phone & Joke Of The Day. So things should open up as time goes by.

Doubtful. Karli could pre-record hers, I doubt Vic will be live (and the 6:20 and 8:20 will most likely be the same single report).

Rick's at his best interacting...he needs to be live and talking with the people in the studio and in the audience. Having pre-recorded material from three people (Rick, Karli and Vic) doesn't make it a show.

I'm afraid Clear Channel misunderstands where the value is in Rick Dees.

I think you put a lot of words after that phrase :)

It can't all be on CC, it's Dees' career, he has to take responsibility for it. He should have told them he will be glad to come back, but only under certain conditions. Live crew should definitely be a part of that as the other posters have mentioned. But remember, back in his later days at KIIS, nearly the first hour and a half were always voicetracked until he sauntered into the studio in the 7:00 hour. Sounds like nothing has changed.

The irony is that so many people (perhaps including Dees) have given up on the one element that separates radio from other formats. Spontaneity. People tune in when they aren't sure what they will hear next. Radio provides that like no other medium can. It was why Howard was so popular. Of course it was the same shtick every day, but what he said was unpredictable enough that people simply did not know what he might say next or how outrageous it might be, and were willing to tune in and stay tuned in to find out. John and Ken work under a similar principle.

Having a taped "Dees Sleaze" segment every morning at the same time that was created the day before will soon bore even the casual listener who doesn't really pay close attention. This sounds like it is going down as bad as I feared it would.

Big Boy said it best. "You can't win today's game with yesterday's playbook". So true!

Synergy, Mr. Wanderer, synergy. ;) Hot 92.3 & KLAC are both Clear Channel properties.

I 100% agree with you. I too was very disappointed in Rick's return. It definitely does sound like he's voicetracking. (I use to listen to him everyday on KIIS when I lived near LA on our commute to school) and what I'm hearing now doesn't sound like the Dees that I, and many others grew up with. I hope that it will get better with time- but I don't know. I was expecting something different, I guess. I'm hoping I'm wrong, and that Rick does start to interact with the listeners, because I too was expecting some welcome back calls, which I heard none of. I miss the 'old' Rick Dees. I definitely agree that it is tight. If this continues, though, unfortunately, I don't think I'll be listening to the online stream anymore. (even though it is Rick Dees) this week should've been a huge celebration and homecoming for Rick Dees, because after all, it is Rick Dees, whom has been a house hold name for 25 years in So Cal, but instead we get short liners, barely any interaction with listeners, and a very tight production. I'll listen again, but if it keeps up, I am not sure I can continue to listen to Rick Dees.
