Wow Rick! 50 years! Imagine it. I’m happy to have known you for the last 25. I certainly hope you do enjoy retirement, but I have a feeling you won’t be sitting on the porch watching the world go by.
Watching you at work during my early years of radio was certainly a treat. When you hosted “Juke Box Saturday Night” at WERU, it simply amazed me how you took the phone calls, recorded them on the reel to reel and play them back all within a Glenn Miller 2:30 song. Thank you for mentoring me during that time, I certainly learned a lot. And it was great fun to sit in for you on that program, and later on the morning show at WDEA. I learned very early that you had a loyal following. You proved that it wasn’t just the music you played, but the camaraderie you had with your listeners. Fund raising time at ‘ERU was magic when you were there and when your brother joined in, you were unstoppable.
Thanks for the times when you let me join you in the studio in Ellsworth. You’ve adapted with the times in regards to how things are done. No more vinyl, no carts, just the computer and MP3’s.
I’ve always remembered you telling me that you’ve had so much fun at WDEA, because of the (pretty much) free rein you had. I think your exact words were: “I love it here, because who else is going to give me a 5000 watt transmitter to play with every morning.”
Come September 1st, the Wonderful Down East Area, will truly be missing an icon, a friend and a good neighbor to help get the day going. Whether it’s a beautiful summer morning like the ones we’ve had lately or a “no school” winter day, the airwaves will be a bit emptier.
Time does march on, but it seems we are losing a lot of what radio was. I know that’s been said for the last 50 plus years, but it seems to be truer now.
But look at it this way Rick, with your free time, maybe you can sell FREE! real estate again, or maybe you can apply to do Telejournal News on WABI on Sunday nights again.
Whatever you do Rick, enjoy! God bless you.
