Rick Gillette KZON - KOOL PD on the Way To NYC

Surprised nobody mentioned this yet. Rick Gillette has been chosen by CBS to be the PD of WXRK - NOW 92.3 in New York. He certainly has beefed up the numbers for KZON and KOOL... looks like they have some faith that he will inject some needed life into NOW FM. I think he will succeed there.

I don't know the guy, but he sure has done something right in Phoenix.

Good Luck Rick!!!

Rick Gillette has been around for about 30 years..maybe longer. My memory of him was that he was program director of the former WHYT Detroit (believe its WPLT now? or was that a few years back) from the mid 80's until about 1996. That station was rhythmic CHR until 1993 when it evolved to mainstream CHR. In 1994 the station began to lean rock and alternative and by mid 1995 they were pure alternative leaning pop under Gillette, but reporting as alternative. In 1996 WHYT softened its alternative format (it was already softer than most modern rockers anyway) and became an adult modern rocker, reporting as a Hot AC (Like many did). he then left and that station became WPLT aka The Planet.

What I'll miss most is his cleaver Legal IDs on 101.5...

"Yeah, we've got our papers, they say K-Z-O-N, F-M, Phoenix

or what's the one about being naughty for extra credit?

He certainly added an element of creativity and fun to the stations!

Longer actually...back in the 70's and early 80's, he was at KAFY/Bakersfield as Rick Morgan (1977)and after that at KSFM/Sacramento and KGB/San Diego as Rick Gillette...

Good news!

His previous gig was 20 years ago?

It's not like the guy hasn't worked in 20 years. Furthermore, he HAS worked at WBBM (during a great time for that station), KMEL, and KIOI within the past 20 years.

Yeah but to paraphrase Janet Jackson, what has he done for me lately? Was he a PD ten years ago? Five?

The story on AllnAccess was more detailed and explained that he has been the Chief Programming Officer for Results Radio which owns about a dozen stations around northern California.

Geez...I should have clarified that it was good news TO ME.

I didn't think people would be judging him so soon. He hasn't even arrived in the valley yet.

I had the good fortune of being in Reno when Shakes hit town in the early-mid 80s and took a signal that was always a loser straight to #1. The guy is a born programmer, spent time in college behind the scenes at KFRC when it was on fire. Every one of his stations has sounded amazing. I expect he'll be brilliant at KZON and KOOL.
