RICK JEANNERET'S SEMI-RETIREMENT

time will tell:
-"pretty much" whomever they select,
we will critique at first,, (on here) at
the pub/bar - - - but still listen
since it is the cup bound buffalo sabres,
-
and then in a few seasons , just "get used" to
the new voice - and while at first, be he's (or she)
is no rick jennerette(?sp) which is a TOUGH /if not
impossible - but will get used to it -
-
NOW:
what about this scenario:
the new owner has a few extra pennies laying around, what
if an "open" audition or imports a TALENTED big voice
say from New York - and while *NOT* "RJ - is
an instant success... thoughts ?

While RJ's doing half the games, whoever does the other half is likely to be a stop-gap. Son Mark could get another chance to see if he's improved, or some of the other names here may get some games to make an impression.

I don't see them bringing in a high-priced outsider until RJ hangs 'em up completely, and there's a summer in between to lessen the comparisons.

So if you are a season ticket holder, it basically means no more RJ.

I wonder if Pegula/Black gave that much thought. You're basically limiting your most hardcore (and in certain cases some of your wealthiest) fans to hearing Rick and Harry just do select road games unless they choose to sell their tickets or walk around HSBC Arena with a portable radio.

That may not sit well with some.

I'm pretty sure that Pegula/Black had a choice of RJ for home games, or no RJ at all. He took what he could get.

does this factor in ???

10.5 months from now, the
sabres finish the season with
a 17-65 record....

-RJ has stated (interview w/ WIVB)
he does wants to BE HERE
for the magical moments of
Lord Stanley - and ANYTHING
to do w/ the playoffs but
what IF, they have just an
awful season...dropping
43-in a row, in a rather
(ugh)laughing stock, forgettable
season...will he say thanks for
the memories?

not "his"fault they stunk it up,
but he has expressed his frustration
(professionally)of course, when they play bad..
memorable moment: exit versus pens, in playoffs..
"...and then pens win(gives score), see u in the fall"
(no lead/outro); no sign-off, did say thanks, but it was
quick and to the point...

Conversely - if the SABRES win it all, this time next year,
does he ((not take the away from the players and THEIR moment at the time)),
because he is a CLASSY guy -
but say in mid july, (giving the team)enough
time to decide what to do, decide a repeat
is doubtful and it doesnt get any better than this
-

just a few thougts..

Gotta feel for Jim Lorentz.

He probably would have loved a reduced workload but instead he's shown the day just days before the season starts. Now Rick AND Harry get to work part-time and avoid most of those horrific road trips with late nights, early mornings and long plane flights.

I still would like to see Lorentz come back if he's willing to be "the other Harry" and do the road games. Sure, it's travel, but it's about 40 games per season as opposed to 82-plus. Ted Black would be wise to dial Jim up just to see what he's doing. Probably wouldn't go for it, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Anyone know what Barry Beutel is doing these days?

Don Stevens from the Amerks deserves at least an interview. Ted Black knows talent, hopefully Don gets a call to come visit Buffalo and chat.

With all due respect, there is a reason Don Stevens has been with the Amerks for 25 years.

While in college a few years ago , we interviewed him on our live sports talk show and when asked if he thought he would have been with the Amerks for 20-plus years he candidly replied no, figuring he would have gotten an NHL job at some point.

He's taxing to listen to because he is always at an 8 or 9, even when the puck is being dumped into the zone for a line change. It's hard to tell when legitimate scoring chances are happening because his pace is fast and loud the majority of the time.

Don't get me wrong, he is definitely talented but do you think the Sabres would replace a 68 or 69 year old Jeanneret with a 63 year old Stevens?

Go big - offer Doc Emrick the job. Show him the money and give him job security and the ability to work network TV games and he may consider it if Pegula offers up enough $$$$$$$$ and RJ's ego can deal with it.

Emrick is 64. Probably wants to work another 5-6 years.

Show him the $$$ and he would think about it.

He does play-by-play for the Devils. Nothing luxurious about that gig. The chance to be the voice of a team where the fans are passionate and sell the building out nearly 40 times a year would be intriguing, especially when compared to the relatively lack of interest in hockey shown by the majority of folks in the New Jersey area.

Heh. A guy who MAY be unhappy doing the Jersey Devils is gonna MOVE to Buffalo from the #1 media market in the country at the age of 64? Get a grip, George. Buffalo is a stepping stone now, not a destination - even for the Sabres play-by-play. Remember, there are a few months a year without hockey.

Thought I would bring this back and ask opinions on Sylvester/Gare? Considering what they've had to call, I think they've done a decent job. I'm happier with Sylvester than R.J.'s son and Gare is a likable guy. The 3rd guy of the "B squad" - sorry, I'm drawing a blank on his name- seems to pitch in when needed as well.

1. kevin sly sounded fine - It took me a few minutes,
to say Oh yea, RJ is in semi-retirement.
-
2. thinking:
whom ever they select, will go thru the following
(years 1-3) he's not "RJ" and then will settle
into their own style..

Gotta tell ya', if you want an eye-opening experience on this subject, check out this very active hockey board.

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=1085587

I happen to agree with most of the posters there, in that Kevin and Danny are absolutely horrendous. Their amateurish musings take away from the experience. Kevin's childish over-the-top homerisms and exclamations are cringe-worthy, annoying plenty of fans. Danny reacts to plays before Kevin even calls them...and that isn't because he's new at this; He WAS the color guy for the Columbus Blue Jackets...and should know better---but this is just for starters. They really are bad.

I do hope Terry Pegula and company have another crew in mind when RJ retires, because there are some people, myself included, who actually watch other teams feeds if available, just to avoid these two.

I've read the posts on some of the hockey boards, too. That's some pretty harsh stuff. It makes the criticism on this board seem tame. The Sabres have sucked bilge water this season, hockey is a very challenging game to call and Jeanneret is revered for his years of PBP. But yeah, jas2525 is right, it sounds as if Danny wants to call the games and Sylvester is out of his league. He should have spent time in the minors learning the craft. The fans can be pretty cruel at times, but in this case they're spot on. These guys are not the replacement for Jeanneret. It may be best to put in a call to Pete Webber.

Clearly doing more with less, doesnt mean doing less with MUCH MUCH Less. I agree with most posters on Kevin Sylvester, Paul Hamilton, RJs son. Even everyone on this board w/any chops in radio, know that PBP is intense on the NHL level. But these guys are worse than the 'Call the play" exhibit @ Hockey hall of fame. Theres been bad planning by media, sports, and now, even the NHL. Hell, I could do a better job lol

But some heavy hitter , such as former ESPN guys Gary Thorne and some poaching from Versus would be fantastic (Bill Clemente)

Other things such as GR picking up the Bills, and the clear drop in the Sabres performance as of late are factors in how open Entercom's checkbook will be.

We're at the All Star Break and its good to get a good candidate pool for 2012-2013.... Im being optimistic
