Rick Sanchez Now Hosting Afternoons on WIOD

Former CNN WSVN-7 TV News Anchor Rick Sanchez has replaced Rich Minaya in afternoon drive on WIOD. An upgrade and a relevant choice given his history in the market. Funny that I turned on the radio and I recognized it was Rick right away without having read anything about the hire. How about that. Good luck Rick!

He's certainly more energetic and and less whiny than Rich. He's actually got a personality, too. But, eh -- lukewarm right out of the box. He's currently talking to what sounds like an 85 year old woman gushing over him. WFTL called, 610; they want their audience back.

Actually, it's probably a good move. He's locally known. He can appeal to both English and Spanish cultures. He's controversial (to say the least) and talk radio loves that.
He'll do okay and better than the totally unknown last guy.

Sorry, but I don't think Sanchez hits the "sweet spot" for talk radio in this area.

The fact that he speaks Spanish on an English language radio station isn't going to get him one extra listener, and his politics are too liberal for the station.  Reminds me of Jim Defede, another "sure thing". Probably Allen West would get a good audience in that time slot.

I would have loved to see Allen West in that timeslot.

I wonder if Allen West would do a talk show on WFTL, which has a further reach north of Palm Beach .. which is where he would want to broadcast to.  Not sure if he has bigger fish to fry, West will likely run again for that Congressional Seat in 2014.   Does anyone listen to WFTL, it does have a powerful signal.

First of all, Sanchez is a TV guy. At least that's closer to radio than a newspaper guy. Defede was smart, but he SUCKED on the radio. Mumbled, thought he was funny, didn't know what to do next. Sanchez WILL know what to do and say to get people fired up. In fact, a crazy liberal might just do okay on a conservative station. He'll get lots of people to hate him. And lot's of people will translate to ratings which (hopefully) will translate to dollars for CC.

I haven't listened, but I highly doubt he's speaking Spanish. Did he speak Spanish when he was on TV in South Florida? Did he speak Spanish on CNN? No. But he understands the Spanish speaking community better. And likely can connect a little better. I think someone who is bilingual might tune into Sanchez before they tuned into the other guy who was on WIOD.

Alan West might be a controversial guy, but he would also be a bore on the radio because he has no radio experience.

Say what you will about Allen West, he is never boring. The issue is if he wants to do the radio grind day in and day out. And things that he would say on the radio to drum up an audience can and will be used against him if he runs for Congress again.

My guess is he wouldn't do it.
